"Happy third birthday, sweetheart!" Lily's dad exclaimed as her mother brought her cake into the dining room.
Lily squealed happily and blew out the candles. She couldn't wait to find out what was in her room upstairs. She wasn't allowed to go up, since a special birthday present was up there.
"What did ya wish for, Lily?" Jasper, Lily's best friend asked eagerly.
"I can't tell ya, or it won't come true!" Lily said quickly.
Jasper's face saddened, but brightened as fast as it came when a piece of cake was set in front of him.
As everyone ate cake, Lily could only think of the surprise waiting upstairs. What could it be?
-
"G'bye Jasper!" Lily said as she hugged her friend before he walked out the door with his father.
"Bye!"
Soon all Lily's guests left and her father carried her up to her room to see her surprise.
She climbed down from his arms and ran to the box which was making slightly foreign noises.
Dragonite walked over from behind Lily's mother and nudged Lily, and when she looked up, seemed to be smiling all over.
Lily smiled back and when she opened the box, she found herself on her back, being licked by an Eevee.
As she got up she gasped. Her own Pokèmon?
"He's yours, sweetheart!" Lily's father beamed.
"You just can't train him yet, we don't want anyone getting hurt. Eevee doesn't have enough experience." Her mother added.
Lily nodded and hugged Eevee.
"My own Pokèmon,"
-
"Wow!" Jasper exclaimed as He opened the door to see Lily carrying Eevee the next day.
"I got him for my birthday!" Lily said with a grin.
Jasper and her went to his room and played with Eevee. Soon Jasper's mother came up with a small box.
"Jasper you remember when I told you how I came from a land called Sinnoh and came to Johto when I married your father?" She said as she sat down next to the small children.
Jasper nodded.
"Well in Sinnoh we made treats for Pokèmon called poffins." She said with a smile.
Eevee perked up at the word poffins.
Jasper's mom opened the small box and pulled out a roundish oval like pastry.
Eevee looked at it as if he were in a daze. He cautiously walked up to her open hand and suddenly ate the treat in one bite.
Jasper's mom laughed lightly, kissed Jasper's forehead and returned down stairs.
Eevee sniffed around and made the small children laugh.
"He must think there's more!" Jasper said between laughs.
What seemed like only minutes later there was a knock on the front door and Lily recognized her mother's voice.
She heard her mother chat quietly with Jasper's parents before being called down to go home.
"G'bye Lily," Jasper said with a pat on Eevee's head.
"Bye," Lily said as she picked up Eevee and walked toward home with her mother.
-
When she got home, dinner was ready and her mother's usually lifefull spirit was dampened.
Her father smiled half-heartedly at her and helped her get seated with Eevee.
Lily was confused and ate slowly.
Dragonite smiled at her from the kitchen and she couldn't help but smile back.
Eevee ate happily, cheering Lily more.
It must be her imagination, her parents are happy as usual, her father is still smiling, nothing is wrong.
So when she was tucked in bed later that night Lily didn't fight. She was tired and wanted to cuddle up with Eevee.
But when her father kissed her goodnight, he seemed to linger much longer than he usually did. Then all her thoughts of sadness and something being wrong crept back.
After her father left her room, she got up and sneaked to the bottom of the stairs. She saw her dad with two bags and his Pokèballs.
He kissed her mother and said, "I love you, Selene, don't forget that." His voice seemed to threaten tears. "Make sure Lily knows her daddy loves her," he said, hugging his wife.
Lily's eyes widened and tears spilled.
"DADDY!" Lily shouted, running to her father as he walked out the door with his head down.
Her mother scooped up the small child before she ran out the door after the man letting his Dewgong into the water.
"DADDY!" Lily shouted again, tears streaming down her face.
Her mother tried to calm her down, but her young daughter just wanted her father.
Eevee couldn't stop her crying.
Not even Dragonite.
