Zayne’s POV

When I reach the bottom landing, I scent wolf but not my wolf. I make my way through the throngs of people to find an unexpected face standing in the doorway.

"Chase?"

Chase turns around and flashes me a grin. "Wassup, Zay-Zay?"

I sneer at the overly friendly nickname; even my closest friends would never dare to use such a disrespectful way to address their future Clan Leader. But I let go figuring maybe the wolves do things differently in their pack.

My father looks from me, clearly thinking the same thing. "Do you know this young man, Zayne?"

I nod slowly. "Yeah. He's the young Alpha's friend, Chase." I turn to the person standing in the doorway growing more suspicious of his visit.

Ever since Chase found out about my relationship with Luke, I've been making sure to keep my distance from him. Not because I was afraid he was going to tell on us; in fact, I would have preferred it if I'm being perfectly honest. No, I kept my distance because something about him just didn't sit right with me. His aura has always been cloudy ever since I first met him but it was extremely so when he caught us in bed together at the hospital, and it was laced with a poisonous film.

I sill haven't deciphered what it all means so I push the issue to the back of my mind and forcefully return his grin. "Why don't we step outside for some privacy?" I say, motioning for him to follow me outside and closing the door to all the prying eyes of my Clan.

The moment the door closes, Chase's grin immediately crumbles and in its place is an unforgiving look of hate. Ahhh I see, so now the mask finally come off.

I smirk at his obvious disdain. "Hey, Chase, I don't want to embarrass you but you seem to be confused; this isn't your pack's land anymore. If you’re looking for the after-party, it's in the opposite direction?" I inform him.

He sneers. "Believe me, if I could help it, I wouldn't even be here right now--"

"Then why are you," I interrupt him, folding my arms.

He closes his eyes but not before I catch a peek of dark charcoal eyes. Awww, it seems the little doggie is starting to get upset. I don't even try to hide my smirk.

He takes some soothing breaths while I look on with mild amusement, before he looks up at me with restrained anger. "The young Alpha wanted me to fetch you."

I lift my eyebrow, skeptically. "Really? Because I just talked to him and he said he's on his way here, so..."

He pauses for a second with a scrunched forehead before gives me a resigned look, like he has finally came to a conclusion. "Look, I know you don't trust me and, honestly, I don't trust you either. I'm not going to lie to you, when I found out about your relationship, I was angry. Beyond angry. In fact, I was so angry that I got in a fight with Luk--I mean, the young Alpha over it. The fact that my young Alpha is in that kind of relationship and with the likes of you made my stomach turn, but I respect him as a person and as a friend, so it only makes sense that I would respect his decision."

I remain quiet, and let him go on. He takes a deep breath and let's it out slowly, "I swear on my young Alpha’s life, that he has sent me here to fetch you. He told me to tell you that it was a surprise but I'm pretty sure you know what he has planned. Plus I figured you don’t trust me enough to just follow me blindly."

We stand there for a second in silence as I try to figure out whether he’s telling me the truth or not. He quirks his right eyebrow and smirks, "Now are you seriously going to make him wait any longer? If you don't want to see him then that works for me to. I’ll just go and let him know." He shrugs nonchalantly and without another word walks off the porch.
