"Don't give me that look." Sighed Jake, the large rattlesnake tilting his hat down on his head a bit, avoiding the eyes of his wife that were filled with heartache. "You knew this day would come eventually." He told her solemnly, turning his flaming gaze to meet her gaze once again. He didn't move from the spot in the door of their...her home now.
Lily pried her yellow gaze away from his, frowning slightly. "I thought you might have changed.." She said honestly, looking down the hallway toward a closed bedroom door. "Jacob, you can'-"
"Don't call be by that name!" Jake hissed angrily, seeing her flinch back as he felt guilt washed through him immediately. He swore that he'd never let any woman tame him, he was the feared Rattlesnake Jake after all! Yet...here he was.
"Are you really going to turn your back on Abigail too?" Lily asked, returning her gaze to his, motioning to the bedroom down the hall where their daughter slept, a pleading gaze in her satin gold eyes.
"Lily," Jake started with a sigh. "You knew what you were getting yourself into when you came to me. You knew who I was," He paused. "Who am I." He corrected himself, starting slow and choosing his words carefully. "I don't want her to live in the same kind of world that we did. You know very well if 'certain people' found out she was my daughter she'd be constantly targeted."
Silence floated through the entrance of the house, Lily staring at the ground quietly. "It won't take long even if you leave. She has your eyes Jake. There'll be no mistaking she's yours." She said, looking at him again. She would try anything possible to make him stay.
Jake turned his gaze away from her, unable to manage eye contact any longer. "Then if it comes to that I'll come back and protect you both." He swore to her, turning to the door as he swung it open. "Until then.." He tipped her hat at her before disappearing out the door, leaving an absence within the home.
