Kayla's POV

Mum and Dad had surprised me with a night out to one of our favorite family diners, located downtown. Every time we went there the staff would welcome us with open arms and treat us as if we were family. We were walking home, seeing as the diner wasn't far from our apartment block. We were all laughing and smiling as we walked to the back entrance. My dad reached to put the keys into the lock, when we heard a voice.

"Enjoyed dinner, did we?" The voice questioned. We all turned around to look for the source of the voice. The lack of lighting didn't make it any easier. Then two goons walked out into the light. Then followed by what looked like to be the source of the voice and the leader in their gang.

"Can we help you?" Asked my father, as he started to move in front of my mother and I.

"Let me give you some advise. It's not wise to be walking around the streets this late of night, in the Slums of Gotham."

"Well then I guess it's best if we go inside." Replied my father slowly pushing my mother and I into the building. The goons started approaching as their leader continued to talk.

"Well you're out and the guys and I are looking for a bit of fun. Wanna play?" There leader said as they pulled out their weapons. My father shoved my mother and I into the building and locked the door behind us. We waited for things to quieten down. Careful not to make a noise.

"Kayla. Quickly, go down the hall and turn left. You'll find the fire exit. Run and don't stop okay?" my mother said in a hushed tone.

"What about you?"

"I'll grab your father and we'll follow. Just go." She pleaded. Little did I know that she wouldn't. I nodded. I gave her the biggest hug with all the strength I could muster. She kissed the top of my head and sent me on my way. I just got around the corner when I heard the door open.

"Boss. There's only one!" I heard one of the goons yell. I couldn't run. They would've heard me.

"Where's your little one miss?" My mother didn't answer.

"C'mon. You don't want to end up like your dear old hubby? Do ya?" I looked around the corner to see him motioning at my father, dead in the alley. My mother still hadn't answered them.

"Ok, screw it!" The boss grabbed his gun and shot at my mother. I saw her fall to the floor.

"Look for her. Bring her back to me. My fun isn't over yet!" With that I ran to the exit not caring if they heard me. I opened the door and ran out into the alley and back out onto the street. Was it safe? Probably not. But I didn't care. I kept running and running, not knowing where I was running to. I heard voices every where as the past events played on in my head like movies.

All of a sudden I hit something. I looked up and saw a middle aged man in a blue Police uniform. I starred at him, not knowing what to say.

"Are you okay? Can I help you?" Before I could answer him, I broke down into tears. Crying for the first time. I guess I had been to caught up to take a second and think. The officer helped me into is car and took me down to the station.

I was able to calm down and told him what had happened. The next few days were rough. I was being asked what happened, who they were and what they looked like. The hardest question was if I had anyone I could stay with. I had family friends that I had known since I was born, but I wouldn't be able to stay with them.

Some time passed and I was put into the Foster Care system. There weren't a lot of families wanting to take in a 10 year old girl, from the Slums of Gotham. However, I was found a family and moved in with them. Despite the sudden change in lifestyle, I continued to grow up and go to school. However, after that night, something changed. Like a switch.
