Even the very skies were mourning her loss. Thunder crackled hopelessly in remembrance and lightning lashed out in fury. The tears of heaven plummeted, cracking and washing away the earth. The once bright and hopeful sky of glittering blues was now devoid of colour and radiated nothing but melancholy. It made sense to him that the ground and heavens were dead because she was the earth and sky to him. She was reason he got out of bed every morning. She was the sunshine that cut through his gloomy demeanour and stole his heart.
He could feel the scalding tears streaming his face, mix with the frozen apathy of the downpour. A bitter-sweet smile sliced across his guilty countenance and his meaningful eyes forcefully closed in pain. His chest was so tight and his breathing rapid. His ribs were slowly squeezing him, getting tighter and tighter, and leaving him smaller and smaller, until the pain was nearly unbearable. It wasn't too dissimilar to the sensation you get when being strangled by a boa constrictor. It would curl around its prey, merciless, and would tighten its grip with every breath the helpless creature gasped. Fate was his boa constrictor and he was on his last breath. He tried to suck in one more lungful, but it stung and he rattled coughs. Despite not being hurt physically, he hurt inside so much more than anyone would understand, than should be possible. It was absolute agony.
And it was all his fault.
He focussed on their good times. Him asking her out on their first date.
"H-hey Valkyrie..." He had begun, blushing furiously and shuffling his feet, suddenly very interested in the pavement. She smirked and if he had looked up he would have seen her lightly blush too. "W-would you l-like to g-go out wi-with me?" He looked up hopefully, to see her looking very flustered.
"Maybe a-another time?" She responded. He was crushed, but some hope still flared within him. It wasn't a direct no. He forced himself to smile in understanding and nod. She gave him a weak grin back. He had returned every week, asking her the same question, until she had finally said "Yes". It had filled him with such utter joy and warmth, that he had shed tears of gratitude. The universe had finally shown him a mercy.
Dusk snapped back to the present and doubled over in overwhelming pain, clutching his sides and sinking to his knees. The tears flowed harder, threatening to choke him. He remembered the first time she said 'I love you,' and he remembered her screams as he tore her apart after someone tampered with his serum. Someone had made sure his serum didn't work and he turned, lost control. Despite someone else tampering with the serum, Dusk was still the one who killed her. It was his fault.
Dusk turned his head to the sky and let the rain sting his eyes as the sun steadily rose higher. He wouldn't be there to see it finish. He guaranteed. This morning, he would be joining Valkyrie.
