Taking The Fall

"Just one more step..." My foot neared the edge. I was just one step away.

"You might want to get down from there, you could fall." I heard someone speak behind me, and I turned to see a man standing there, looking at me. He looked no older than 17, with black hair and piercing gray eyes.

"That's kind of the point."

"Are you really gonna jump."

"Why do you care?" I asked, looking back at the road below.

"Are you really gonna jump?" He repeated, ignoring my question.

I looked at him, then back down. "Yes." I answered in a low whisper.

"Why?"

I froze. All the memories flooding back into my mind, every death, every time that I was abandoned, every insult, every punch, kick, snowball, and rock thrown at me. "Answer my question first."

"Because, I may not know you, but I don't want to witness any more deaths. Now, answer my question; why?"

He was obviously a stubborn man, continuing to interrogate me. "I can't explain it really..." I knew I could, but I didn't want to. Thinking about it made me near tears, saying it would make me an emotional wreck.

"I'm going to assume if you can't tell me, the reasons are not good enough for you to end your life."

"I have been abandoned by everyone!" I snapped, turning to him. "Everyone I ever cared about has died or left me! I'm made fun of for everything and..." I trailed off, tears falling from my eyes as I turned back to the ground.

"Can you please get down from there."

"No..."

I heard him sigh loudly, and I heard his footsteps nearing me. Before I could turn around, I was lifted off the ground by a pair of strong arms, and thrown over his shoulder as he walked to the roof door.

"Put me down!" I started banging my fist on his back.

"I'm sorry, but I can not do that until you are safely on ground level." He opened the door and stepped inside, the door slamming behind him.

"This is technically kidnapping!" I attempted to convince him to put me down.

"Just shut up. I'm helping you." He started walking down the stairs.

"No, you're not! Just let me go!"

He chuckled slightly. "I'm never letting you go."

I stopped struggling. I realized that this man just saved me from everything. A real friend.

"What's your name?" I asked quietly.

"If I tell you, you have to promise me you'll never pull a stunt like that again." His voice was dead serious and I found it sweet that he cared so much for a stranger.

"As long as you are always there to keep me from needing to."

"Fine."

"Then I promise."

He stopped on one of the turning steps that were larger than the others, and set me down. "Levi."

"No last name?" I smiled slightly.

"What's your name?" Levi asked, avoiding the question.

"My name is Petra." I held out my hand, and he looked at it hesitantly before taking it in his own and shaking it.

"Ackerman."

"Ral."

Years passed since I met Levi. He was one of my best friends for as long as I can remember, but about 2 years ago, we stopped being friends, and became boyfriend and girlfriend. Last year, he proposed on July 22, 2013. It was the most memorable moment in my life. And to think, none of this would have ever happened if he wouldn't have just been in the right place, at the right time.

It was a typical fairytale that I thought would never happen to me. It was perfect.

But real fairytales don't exist.

2 weeks ago, he was found dead on his way home from work.

On July 22, 2014, my fairytale ended.

Now, here I am. On the top of the building that I stood on 6 years ago. He broke his promise, so it's time to break mine.

"Petra!" I heard a voice yell, and I turned to see Eren at the door of the roof. Just like Levi was, 6 years ago.

"I'm sorry, Eren! Take care of Mikasa and everyone else. I love you all so much!" Tears were flowing freely from my eyes. I started leaning back, and I saw Eren running towards me.

"PETRA! NO!"

I felt his fingers brush against mine. I saw the tears in his eyes as he looked over the edge, reaching down for me. I heard his screaming. I mouthed one last "I'm sorry".

I felt like I was flying. I felt the wind push against me. Then, I felt nothing.
