"He loves me, he loves me not. He loves me, he loves me not."

Eddie's hands shook as he watched the yellow petals flutter to the ground, one by one. His mom always told him that he was allergic, to stay away. But they were so, so beautiful. How could he stay away from something so intoxicating? Someone?

"He loves me, he loves me not."

His feet scuffed along the concrete as he walked home, plucking. Repeating the mantra. Eddie's walk home always seemed quiet, lonely. He had to find something to occupy his mind, something other than--

Fuck, I'm doing it again, Eddie thought, crumpling the remainder of the daisy in his hands.

"Hey, whatcha got there?" An arm swung around Eddie's shuffling frame.

Startled, Eddie jumped and instinctually hid the flower in his hand. "Jesus! You scared the shit outta me! What the hell, Richie?" He brought his other hand up to his heaving chest and felt his racing heartbeat. Richie hadn't removed his arm.

Richie covered his mouth with his free hand to stop from bursting out laughing and embarrassing Eddie. "Sorry! You just looked so focused, I wanted to know why."

Eddie flushed. "None of your business, Trashmouth." He shrugged Richie's arm off his shoulders and quickly strode forward on his path.

"Wait!" Richie had to jog to catch up with him. "Aww, c'mon Eds! I said I was sorry!" He grabbed on to Eddie's shoulder and stepped in front of him, staring into his eyes with sincerity--so much that Eddie had to avert his eyes downward. "Don't call me that! But...I forgive you, I guess. Now can I keep walking please?" Not waiting to hear an answer, Eddie pushed past him.

"Yeah, yeah." Richie moved and fell into step beside him. "So, what DO you have in your hand?" He asked, his wide eyes magnified in his clunky glasses.

"Nothing, it's just a flower." Eddie grumbled, unfurling his fingers to show the yellow daisy, half-picked.

"Thought you were allergic?" Richie cheekily grinned and sidled up to Eddie's side.

"Yeah, well, I don't care what my mom says." Eddie's face began to pepper a light pink.

"Woah, calm down there pardner. Pretty soon you'll be wrestling with snakes even when ma says not to!" Richie said with an awful southern accent. Eddie didn't respond, striding forward still.

"So how come almost all the petals are picked off, and why were you mumbling to yourself?" Richie questioned. He was struggling to match Eddies pace so he repositioned his lanky arm over Eddie's shoulder again, his hand lightly brushing along Eddie's arm.

Think of something--anything to scapegoat! "Um...I have schizophrenia?" Eddie said sheepishly.

"Bullshit!" He counteracted. "You were doing that stupid rhyme thing. So who's the lucky girl?" Richie winked and roughly nudged his elbow into Eddie's side.

Eddie yelped and fell backwards from the unanticipated movement. Richie subsequently latched onto his hand to help, but had instead been pulled down with him.

"Ahshit--sorry!" Richie said as he landed on top of Eddie.

Richie sat up and stared down at Eddie, not wanting to leave just yet.

"There is no--um...girl." Eddie swallowed thickly, tearing his gaze from Richie's searching one.

Richie's breathing hitched and his eyes seemed to fill with hope.

"Oh...so a boy?" His voice was barely above a whisper as he leaned down a bit, and his hand drifted to where Eddie's was sitting.

Eddie eyed the hand and gulped. "Y-yeah."
His own hand inched towards Richie's, and he finally grabbed hold and intertwined them both.

FUCK. What is happening--what am I doing! Shit! Eddie thought to himself.

Richie squeezed Eddie's hand and closed the distance between the two before Eddie had more time to think. Their lips pressed together, an odd pair. Eddie was dazed, to say the least. Richie pulled away after a few seconds and reached towards the crumpled daisy. He plucked off the last petal and grinned, flushed cheeks and all.

"He loves you."
