Chapter 2: The Witch
I can sense my ears turning deaf little by little as it recover from the strong slap that hit my cheek. Jane just hit me right on my face. She stared at me and said, "Don't you dare tell me what to do with my own stepdaughter! Your father would be so disappointed on you."
"I'm just afraid to lose you that's why i'm begging you to leave me."
She grasped my shoulders with her both hands and moved her face a little closer so that our eyes would meet. "Alexandria Fisher, don't let your fears hold on to you. Now give me that address!" She grabbed the piece of paper from my left hand and proceeded to her car. I'll remember this day. I may have lost my father, but today I met the strongest part of Jane.
I hurried inside her purple car and let her lead me to my new life.
She held up the almost-burned-out paper my father gave and read the address aloud. "10th Avenue, Jackson Street, Vermenter, New York"
I frowned and was about to ask her if she knew the place but then i remembered she was a New Yorker before she lived with us.
I glanced at her and watched her smile as she stares at the paper. At first, you would think that she's smiling because of happiness but if you look straight into her hazel eyes, it was full of pain and sorrow. She just lost her first love. My father whom she met five years ago in New York City. I felt so mad at myself. I always think about my own feelings and never care about others'. I was about to hug Jane when another explosion happened a few blocks away from the car. We glanced at each other and she quickly fire off the engine. The car zoomed through the roads hitting a lot of things. The owners tried to run after us but all we could do is to apologize.
After a few hours of kicking the roads, we decided to take a rest at a gasoline station at the end of a town. I smell something peculiar in these place, there's no one near except for the three gas boys who are now gazing at us as if we are threats to them. Jane touched the door handle to open the door. Her hands, dripping with sweat, are now trembling from fear. I pulled her hand away from the door. "Jane, don't open it. Let them fill up the gas. We can't just trust anyone."
She nodded and swayed her hands in front of her to tell the gas boys to fill it up. They put a smirk on one side of their lips and one man filled the car with gas. He closed the tap and nodded at us. "Jane, let's go! Hit the gas!"
She tried to turn on the engine but she failed. I glanced at the three men and found them touching the car with their glowing hands. I felt my andreline rushed through my veins. I held my stepmom's hand and never turned away my gaze from the enemies.
Think! I need to think of a way to escape this area. My locket is now heating up. 'Dad, help me.' I thought. I don't care if I die but I will never forgive myself if Jane dies, too. Then, a plan came up to my head. They only want me (i don't know why). I'm sure about that. If I go out of the car alone and run to other way, they'll follow me.
"Stupid!" I yelled so loud that Jane jumped a little on her sit.
They will kill her, too. I wiped it all away from my mind.
I can't believe it. My whole body is shaking. The blood drained from my face. No! We're not going to die. I tried to concentrate. How did I do all those weird things? The blue fire that killed Mr. Whisky, the the lightning from my own hands that destroyed Uncle Dean's favorite car and the water which drowned a stray cat. I closed my eyes and filled my heart with the anger and pain I hid for the past fifteen years. I opened my eyes and focused it on the three men. A few seconds later, they blasted to the roof of a nearby shop. Jane quickly put the engine into life and drive to our destination without even daring to stop again.
We arrived at the 10th Avenue but we can't see any house from where we are standing at.
"Now what?" I looked around and found a glass-like thing right in front of Jane and it is gleaming in the sunlight. I frowned and looked at it closely. Suddenly, my locket drew me a lot closer to the barrier and it melted the glass that separates the two places.
"Woah." awe came out from Jane's lips and we started to walk inside.
The house, or should i say mansion, is ten times larger than ours. The heat of the locket turned back to normal. Thank God! It really scares me whenever its temperature rises.
When we arrived at the door, i rang the doorbell and a woman inside told us to wait. A woman, a bit taller than Jane, opened the door and gazed at us with her dark blue eyes. Her long blonde hair were lying on her back. Its curls were highlighted with a blue color that matches her eyes.
"Ma'am, I'm Alex, this is Jane and my fa..."
"I've been expecting you. Just get inside."
We followed her to the living room which is as big as our house. She turned around to face us.
"You don't need to retell the story. I already knew about it. Starting from now, you are going to follow everything I'll say."
She stared at me and turned her glance at Jane.
"Yes, Jane Mikayla Crane. I'm someone you should trust and at the same time, fear."
She may be strikingly beautiful but she makes my knees tremble a lot. Before i could even stop myself, the words just came out of my damn mouth.
"Are you a witch?"
She smirked. Not the adorable but the scary kind.
"Witch?" She laughed, stopped and made her face look straight.
"I guess I'll have to teach you from lesson one."
Jane and I looked at each other, curious about these lessons. I told myself that I don't care about it but deep inside, I'm kinda excited.
She pulled out a staff from her bag and held it out. Her blue eyes looked lighter because of the glow the staff emits. She smiled and said while raising her right eyebrow, "I'm a sorceress."
