"Why are you still here?! I've told you to pack up your things and get the hell out of my house! Why the hell are you still here you old hag!?" Father yelled. My mother sat on the couch, a bottle of alcohol in her hand. She rolls her eyes.
"I've got no where else to go. What, are you really gunna throw out your daughters mother out of her life? What kind of father are you?" She sneers, her words slurred.
"A goddamn good one. BECAUSE I'm throwing you out of her life. You're a terrible influence on her!"
I was three, sitting on the stairs holding my stuffed animal that my mother had given me before she turned into this.
A disappointment. Someone I couldn't rely on to take of me or even love me.
"Pfft, even without my influence, she'd become this. Like mother like daughter." She says with a smirk. She brings the bottle to her lips only to have the bottle ripped from her. My father smashes the bottle on the ground. The liquid inside spilling all over the floor. My mothers faced morphed into something down right terrifying.
And then... All I could see was red. All I could hear was screams. All I could do was cry...
And I don't know how, maybe the neighbors heard the noise, but before I knew it, the police broke down the door and saw my mother standing above my fathers lifeless body with a broken bottle in her hand.
They immediately arrested her. One of the officers saw me and his face softened seeing my red face drenched in tears.
"Hey... Youre going to be ok. Why don't you tell me your name?" He asks, with a soft and calm voice.
"Y-y/n."
"That's a very pretty name."
"T-thank you. It's my name."
He chuckles. "I know it is. But, you're going to have to work with me ok? You're going to have to answer some questions. And don't worry, you're not in trouble." I nod. And lift my head.
"Is daddy ok?" The man's eyes widen, and he coughs.
"Yea, your fathers ok. He's in better place. But, you can't speak to him. You can only send him letters which I'll deliver to him for you, if that's what you wish."
My little kid brain, being so young and gullible, believed what the man said. I turn to my fathers body, and with a happy voice say, "I love you daddy! I'll see you soon, I hope!" With a heavy heart, the officer takes my hand gently and leads me to the car. My mothers cuffed in a different car. She sees me walking out with the man and she blows up. She yells profanities and screeches to the point of not sounding human.
I ignore her. The officer opens the door for me and I crawl in. I plop down and the door closes. I play with the stuffed animal, a cow. I named it after my mother. Not put of respect but just to tick her off. Which it did.
"We're going somewhere.. I don't know where but I'm sure it'll be fun! We're going on an adventure! You'll be my partner in crime! My best friend!" I squeal in excitement. An officer opens the driver side door and hops in and closes it. "Where are we going mister?" He, without looking back at me, smiles and says:
"Someplace safe. Buckle up, kiddo." I do what he says and he starts the car.
As we pass the houses, I begun to fall asleep, laying my head on the plush, I close my eyes and let the darkness take me.
---
I'm awoken to the nice man from before shaking me.
"It's time to get up, kid. We're here."
"Hm? Where are we?"
"Your grandparents house of course! Have... Have you never been here?" I shake my head.
"Mommy never let me see them, even before she started acting funny. She said they were terrible people that were going to take my soul and sell it to the devil in exchange for internal life." The officer states at me with wide eyes. He shakes his head and smiles at me.
"I can assure you they're nothing like that. They're good people with kind souls who love you very much." He holds out his hand and I take it. He leads little me to the front door and he knocks.
A few seconds go by and a little old lady opens the door. Her eyes immediately light up seeing me and the officer. She picks me up and hugs me tightly.
"Thank you. You have no idea how happy I am to see this child." My grandmother cries.
"It's no problem at all. Just make sure you take good care of her."
"Oh don't worry I will, I will!" The officer bids my grandma a good day and walk off. She closes the door and locks it.
"You and I have a lot to talk about missy." I giggle.
And so, that was my life ever since I was three. I don't miss my mom, I've heard she's done terrible things after she was pregnant with me. As for my father... I love him, but I don't remember anything. I was tiny when he died, so my memories of him are blurry.
But, he was a good man, from what I heard...
