Chapter 5

Detective Agency

Haru and the rest of the agency members were cleaning up the mess that the raid from Port Mafia made except Ranpo who was trying to get a marble out of a bottle and also Dazai who seemingly disappeared when they were busy cleaning. Atsushi noticed that Ranpo was just sitting around not helping so he wanted to ask why he was doing that.

"Isn't Ranpo-san going to help, Kunikida-san?" Atsushi said quietly to Kunikida to avoid being heard by the person in question.

And as if he had sensed his name called, Ranpo suddenly called out.

"Kunikida" said Ranpo from the table.

"Eeekk" Atsushi shrieked as he was afraid that he had heard him.

"I got to go to job soon" Ranpo stated.

"Ah, Ranpo-san, I'm very sorry. I can't go with you today. I have other things to take care of" said Kunikida.

"Job? What kind of job is it?" Atsushi became curious at Ranpo's job.

"Heh, the reason that you all can exist as a detective agency is all thanks to me, you know" Ranpo replied proudly.

"Yes, yes, the ability to see through all everything, isn't it, Ranpo-san" Haruno, one of the non-ability member of the agency said.

"Yes, yes, My "Ultra Deduction" " Ranpo said clearly becoming more proud at his ability.

"Hah..." Atsushi could only say so cause he didn't understand a thing about it.

"It's a good opportunity for you, newbie. Go with Ranpo-san and witness his ability with your own eyes" Kunikida ordered Atsushi.

"Eh... What will I be doing?" said wondering if he would be any help to Ranpo.

"Taking Ranpo-san to the job location and coming back with him" Kunikida said as if it was something so obvious.

"EH" Atsushi was instantly confused by that statement.

"Because I don't know how to take trains or ride cars" Ranpo replied, "Hey, hey, let's hurry or I will be late for my work" said Ranpo while pulling Atsushi so that he could not resist.

"Wai...Wait a moment, RANPO-SAN!!" Atsushi struggled but to no avail, the older one dragged him out of the office and off they go to job.

The rest of the members continued to clean after the charade had finished. Haru was done with cleaning her and Dazai's desk and she collected the scattered books and documents around the place and handed them to Haruno.

"Ah, You have collected these? Thanks, Haru-chan" Haruno thanked Haru for her good work.

After being said that, Haru returned to her desk and took out a pen, a letter and an envelope. Then, she started writing.

"Ah.. What are you writing, Haru?" said Kunikida noticing that the younger one was writing something. But after the question came no answer. Haru just kept writing ignoring the presence of Kunikida beside her.

"What are you writing, Haru-chan?" This time Kenji asked.

"..A..letter..to..a..friend" Haru said slowly to Kenji.

"Ara, Kunikida-kun, you sure are hated by her" Yosano said deciding to tease Kunikida.

Kunikida sighed.

"I don't know if I did anything wrong to her but she would not talk or answer to me. She definitely talks to the rest of the members but only me" Kunikida said thinking about the time that she and Dazai joined the agency and she would not even shake hands with him, much less talked to him.

"Maybe, she is just shy" Yosano laughed at the troubling Kunikida.

"Shy...That is?" Kunikida once again looked at Haru who seemingly finished writing the letter. She then packed it in an envelope and went out. Haru quickly went to the post box near the building. Instead of putting it in the post box, she waited for some time until a pigeon with a bandage on one of its leg appeared.

"Ah,....Just like..I thought" Haru smiled at the pigeon who landed on her hand, "I thought...I saw...you..when...I was outside...Look like...I wasn't..wrong...Please.... deliver this letter....to that person" she said as she handed the letter in its mouth and off it went to the sky. Haru was really excited at the thought of her pen friend was here in this city again. "Long time..no see....Dor-kun" she quietly said to herself and returned back to the agency.

Around Evening

"I really didn't thought that the police officer was the culprit" Atsushi thought about the events near the river bank this noon.

"Well, you should not judge a book by its cover, Atsushi-kun" said Dazai who was next to him with Ranpo walking way in front of them.

"Ranpo-san's ability sure is amazing. He was able to figure out everything in a short amount of time" Atsushi really was astonished by Ranpo's ability.

"Ah, It is not an ability, Atsushi-kun" Dazai corrected him.

"Huh, What do you mean by that?" Atsushi was confused at his statement.

"Well, I was actually secretly holding a strand of Ranpo-san's hair when he activated his ability back then. You know that my ability allows me to nullify any ability that I touch right? Dazai said while looking at the back of Ranpo.

"Huh, Then, how did Ranpo-san figure it out and why did he lie?" Atsushi was already full of questions.

"Well, if it is not an ability then it is purely talent. And everyone else in the Agency knows that Ranpo-san doesn't have an ability. Only Ranpo-san himself thinks that he has an ability" Dazai replied back to Atsushi who stopped in his tracks, "That is why everyone in the agency admires him for that. Well, of course, I too witnessed his ability only today although I have heard about it."

"Ohh.That is.....why" Atsushi had his thoughts full of the declaration that Dazai just made.

"Well, small things like that don't matter as long as he is a member of the Detective Agency and an ally to us, isn't it?" Dazai said to the standing still Atsushi.

"Ah..Yes. That is right, Dazai-san" said Atsushi who got out of his own thinking," By the way, aren't you suppose to be with Haru-san?" Atsushi asked another question.

"Huh...What do you mean by that?" Dazai answered back with another question.

"Ah, please don't get me wrong, Dazai-san. Since joining the agency, I have seen you two together a lot so..." Atsushi said.

"Listen Atsushi-kun. Even I have my own private time and so does Haru too. I have got to do a lot of things you know like testing out the new suicide methods from a book that I bought last week and finding a wonderful...." Dazai said to Atsushi like giving him a lecture. At that moment, Ranpo's voice rang out.

"Hey, what are you two doing? Let's hurry up home because I am hungry and since I can't take the train or bus on my own, I really need one of you to guide me though" Ranpo was obviously annoyed that they were way behind him and not letting him join the fun that they were having.

"Yes, we are coming now, Ranpo-san" Atsushi replied, really glad that he wouldn't have to listen to the lecture that Dazai was about to give him about suicide, "Now, let's go, Dazai-san" Atsushi said while starting to run towards Ranpo.

"Well, you have escaped this one, Atsushi-kun. But, I have many chances to teach you about suicide" Dazai said to Atsushi, who clearly didn't hear what he said. "I wonder what Haru is doing now" he thought while running towards to where Atsushi and Ranpo were and to a new tomorrow.
