I wake to the sound of rhythmic pounding on my bedroom door.
"Heeeeeeyyyyy, MC! Wake up, dummy!"
The male's voice took a small breath in before once again pounding at my bedroom door. I court feel his tone seep it's way into my tired brain, having me ache to get up. But did I want to? Not in the slightest, actually.
"We're gonna be late again!"
The voice behind the door, practically begging me to get up, was Satori; my neighbor and best friend since we were children. You know, the kind of friend you do everything with and know everything about? Yeah, that's Satori. With how much he blabs, it's hard not to listen and learn every little detail about him. Satori and I walk to school together everyday. Well, some days we need to run to school. Starting around last year, Satori began oversleeping, and this habit has only increased in frequency over the months. On the other hand, I have always overslept, often to the point of missing school. So, since Satori wakes up first, he makes sure to come and get me. Sure, we both end up being a little late, but at least we get there. I groan and bury my face in my pillow.
"C'mon, now! Don't make me come in there and drag you out of bed!"
I groggily lift my head out of my soft pillow. It stills calls for me. I wearily open my eyes and sit up.
"Fine! I'm up already!"
I notice the time on my clock. Damn. I should have been out the door ten minutes ago! I swiftly kick off my covers and tumble out of bed with a loud thud. I hurry to my feet and run into the bathroom. No need for a quick shower. Or quick anything. At this rate, I'm not even gonna make it on time for first period. Within five minutes, I'm showered, have my teeth brushed and my hair pulled haphazardly into a messy ponytail. I hear nothing on the other side of my door. Maybe Satori has decided to leave without me. Probably for the best for him, though. He shouldn't be late because of me. I fumble into my school uniform. Maybe Satori is already waiting outside. I finish pulling on my socks, slipping on my shoes and grabbing my book bag before flying out the bedroom door.
Before I know it, we collide and crash down the stairs. Our book bags spill papers and books everywhere. I land on top of Satori's back. We both remain still for a moment, absorbing the shock and pain of the fall. Thankfully, nothing is broken. At least, I can't feel anything quite yet.
"Ugh... I thought you were waiting for me outside!"
I reply, slightly whimpered as I lifted myself off his back. I didn't like being mean to him, but sometimes he deserved it.
"I was going to, I really was!—oww—and now I regret not doing it!"
After slowly helping each other up, we start collecting our papers and books. Quickly replacing them into our respective bags, we head out the door with less skip in our steps than usual. Maybe our ankles are broken. Who knows? We walk across the street together and make our way to school. I look over to Satori who is cheerfully walking next to me. He's always had a jovial disposition. Sure, he has his occasional cranky moments... who doesn't? But most of the time, he's chipper as he can be. He seems to be in a good mood today. I playfully bump into him.
"Oversleeping again, lazy bones?"
I tease, looking up at the boy. His face shifted into a look of agitation. He wasn't really mad, though. I can tell when he's actually mad.
"I'm lazy?! What about you?"
He asked, angrily shoving his hands into his pockets as he looked at me.
"You were up all night playing video games again, weren't you?"
There's a little sass in his tone. I like it. He hasn't been this lively this early in the morning since like, middle school. That's when he actually woke up early.
