I was just your normal, everyday teenager, nothing special. I wasn’t anything to look at, I had short, bushy brown hair, with bright red natural highlights. I was abnormally short, and picked up a range of nicknames from mighty mouse, Polly pocket, and everyone’s favorite, shrimp. I wasn’t popular either, I bordered the line of being a nerd, considering I was pretty good in all my subjects all except for science that is, and I didn’t play any sports. My eyes were green with flecks of brown, which I hated, I would have gave anything if I could have had blue eyes.

Everyone said I looked exactly like my great, great, great grandfather. He had came over from Ireland when he was ten, which explains the red in my hair and why my eyes were green. We only have one picture of him, and I guess we look sort of alike. The reason there’s only one picture of him is because, he up and disappeared when he was only twenty-three, leaving behind his pregnant wife. Its been almost 105 years, and not a clue as to were he went. Only thing they found was his pocket watch, and when they looked around where they found it, there weren’t any other clues.

Back less than a year ago my day usually consisted of trying to survive science class, and being tortured by my bully Chad Red. Chad Red was a oaf a guy, and also one of the biggest kids at school. He had made my life awful ever sense we were four at daycare, and over the years it had just got worse. He was unbearably ugly, and dumb as a box of rocks. I managed to outwit him every once and awhile, but only every once and awhile.

I thought my life sucked, and wished everyday that something would come around to change that. All I can say is be careful for what you wish for, because my wish came true, but not like I had hoped. My world crumbled around me, and one horrible thing happened after another. It all started when I was dared to go to the creepy, old inn at the edge of town. That’s when I met him, if you can even call it a him, and everything changed. I bet your wondering just what happened, you might as well know, it was a dark, dreary, dismal morning the wind blew through the trees, and rain slowly trickled down from the darkening sky…

Chapter 1

“Wake up its time to go to school” my mother yelled from downstairs. I groaned and covered my head with the covers, “Your going to miss your bus, get up” she screamed. “I don’t want to go to school” I murmured, her shoes clicked up the steps “Get up!”, “I just want to stay home” I said, “Your not staying home, you know what happens when you stay home all alone!” She always thought something was going to happen if I was all alone, I was an only child, so she naturally worried about me. “I’m fourteen, I think I can survive!” I yelled back at her. “Marian Greenwood West” she growled.

I hated my name, no one was named Marian anymore. My parents had a boy, so I’m pretty sure they named me Marian just for spite. My parents even knew I hated the name, and they used it to their advantage. “Marian, Marian, Marian” my mother sneered, and smiled wickedly. “I’m up” I yelled.

I missed my bus, and mom had to drive me to school on her way to work. She wasn’t too happy about that either, and I got chewed out the whole way. I sat, and gazed out the car window, watching the buildings, and trees zoom past. I didn’t pay much attention to anything mom said, just got bits and pieces of her long winded lecture. For example “I told you you’d miss the bus if you didn’t get up”, and “If I’m late for work your grounded for the weekend”. I couldn’t care the least, I didn’t have anything to do.

Mom pulled up to the steps to the school, and I jumped out, and slammed the door. I started to walk up the towering steps that led to Groundsburg Middle School, one of the cruelest places on Earth. The small off white building, that was on the verge of falling apart rested peacefully on top of one of the largest hills in the county. And we were forced to walk up and down it everyday, since there was no pavement on the top of the hill. Why do you ask is the reason there was no pavement on the top of the hill, they ran out of money to put pavement there.
