The first lesson is about to start and Stan follows Kenny into the class room. A few heads turn around but Stan keeps looking at the floor. Being the new one sucks. "There's one thing I have to tell you," Kenny mumbles as he throws his bag onto one of the tables. Stan does the same and looks at him, raising an eyebrow. Instead of answering Kenny points with the chin behind Stan so he turns around. First he doesn't notice anything, his eyes wander over the students faces. But then his head stops. "Holy shit." He walks over to the table, his eyes widened and his heart racing. "Kyle?" The boy with the red curls turns around and when their eyes meet Stan's legs get weak. How? What is he doing here? He leans against the table to save himself from falling over. "Yeah?" His voice is the same as Stan remembers but the expression on his face is empty. "Wow that's crazy to see you here. Did you move?" Kyle turns to his friends and then back to Stan. Now he looks confused. "Sorry what's your name?" His heart stops. "Stan." "You must be mistaking me for someone else. Sorry, I don't think we've met before." His mind is going blank for a second. "What? Yes we have. Last summer. In Pismo Beach. You saved me from drowning! We...we were...how can you not remember?" Kyle looks very confused and also a bit annoyed. "Look dude, I'm sorry you had to go through that. Like I've said, you're probably mistaking me for somebody. If I had saved someone's life, I would remember." Stan doesn't understand, he wants to scream at him, shake his shoulders. How can he forget him? No day had passed without Stan thinking of the time they had spent together, the kisses, the way his skin felt. And Kyle can't even remember his face?" Ah." He walks back to his table, feeling defeated and hurt. When he sits down he feels Kenny's hand on his shoulder but he moves away. He looks at his friend, anger all over his face. "Why didn't you tell me? Why did you keep it a secret?" "I wanted to tell you but he didn't seem to remember me either. And I didn't want you to get your hopes up." Stan turns to the front and stares at the wall, his arms crossed. "Dude please, I-" "Just shut up."
He had refused to talk to Kenny for the rest of the day. He should have told him that Kyle is back. And that he doesn't seem to remember either of them. After classes had ended, Stan took a quick shower and decided to go running, ignoring Kenny's desperate attempts to apologize as he walked out of their room. After running through the little forest behind the dorm he left the school's grounds, running through the streets, the adrenalin pumping in his ears. When he returned it was around 9 so Stan hid in the library, turning the pages of some biology dictionary, without being able to read a single word. The letters danced in front of his eyes, formed shapes, imploded, reformed. He saw Kyle's face. His expression this morning. Empty and yet weirded out. Now he is lying in his bed. He had returned once he was sure Kenny had gone to sleep. Then, all of a sudden and without a warning, comes the exhaustion. The result of a burning heart, anger and running for four hours straight. His eyes close automatically and he falls asleep. The sleep is deep and black but it doesn't last for long. The door opens, a figure steps into the dark. He wakes up from the noise of heavy footsteps and loud breathing. When he opens his eyes, he sees the figure standing in the doorway, looking at him. Then he turns around and the door closes behind him. Stan starts to breath faster and can feel panic filling his body. Didn't he lock the door? He looks over to Kenny but the bed is empty. Where did he go? And who was that person? He checks his phone, it's 11:25pm. Then Stan gets up, his legs shaky, and walks towards the unlocked door. He opens it but instead of stepping out into the dark hallway he finds himself in a car park
