I stumbled my way through the front of our house, I jumped down the porch stairs with one leg up, as I hastily put on my converse and my backpack slinging in one arm. Jeff and Dad, already were seated inside the car, waiting impatiently for me.
"Sorry, sorry..", I continued to apologize taking the back seat. It was a cold Saturday evening, grey clouds and I planned well with the copy of "Mansfield Park" tucked under my arm, sweater zipped upto my chin, I was ready to cycle to the small piece of heaven, I called library. But dad suddenly informed about the return of the mayor in the town after his long two month trip to New Orleans and how the town people decided to welcome him back with a small get-together where the whole town was invited in the townhouse. I refused the moment I heard his name, but with one glare from dad, Jeff and I went running up to our room to get ready.
I was sad as my plans were spoilt for one rich spoilt man, but later when I called to tell Fiona, I learnt the library will be closed as well. I was kind of irritated of the fact how they worshipped Kirlos Reid DeMorgan like the God, when he was only human who possibly committed more sins than anyone else in this town.
It was only two songs down and we reached the townhall with people crowded near the street as well as at the entrance. Dad stopped to greet a few people while Jeff and I sneaked in through the large door. I could see half of the place filled with Grooves High student, some were with their parents and some just chatting around the place. The usual chairs were removed and the room looked more spacious than ever with the stage in the front.
I saw Kimber Rose in a beautiful black dress with her mother, who had the same jet black hair as her daughter that ended in a pixie haircut making her look less younger that she was. I looked down at my own attire I came in, feeling a little embrased of my grey sweater that had few wollen strands coming out as it was old, my skin tight ripped jeans and those black converse shoes. I totally looked as jaded as I felt. At least I left my backpack in the car.
"You look cool", Jeff whispered in my ear, wrapped his arm around my shoulder and took me with him near the bay window. Both of us sat down, feeling out of place. Merrindale people were like a huge family, growing up together where as Jeff and I were completely raised in a different country. Although we have lived here almost for six years now, still we knew very less of their culture and we hardly attended any event that the whole town celebrated together, also we were homeschooled before we attended Grooves High. I knew only one fact, Lilac grew here abundantly.
"What would you like, probably something that you will help you relax a bit", I turned a little right to see Tyler making his way towards us. He was dressed nicely as well, not in his usual dark jeans but in a pair of dark brown pants with a white shirt tucked in perfectly and a black coat that he carried on his one arm and hands stuffed in his pockets. His usually blonde mess were set back, giving a perfect view of his well defined face. He nodded to a few people who greeted him, until he stood in front of Jeff and me with his all time smug-face.
"Nothing, except getting out of this boring gather"; Jeff responded standing up.
"Ah, ah you're not allowed to sneak out before the mayor finishes his speech. I promise to help you after that", Tyler tried to stop him from walking away. Jeff hesitated for a moment there, but at last he agreed to stay put for little longer. Dad came together with Davis, talking and laughing. Soon I joined them during their conversation over a billiard game, silently sipping my orange drink. Tyler and Jeff were already out from the scene as I looked around the place... that's when my eyes landed on the person we all gathered today here for, Kirlos entered through the door.
