The houseboat rocked gently in the clear glistening water and the waves slapped against the white sandy beaches of Kararatti as I returned my gaze back to her. The air was slightly salty and there was a slight breeze which blew a few blonde strands of hair onto her face. I leaned over and pushed the hair off her face asking" Do you like the Malabar chicken curry? I watched over the cooks to make sure it's gluten free." " It's delicious" she replied with a smile. "Have some coconut water to help wash it down"I said holding the coconut out for her,"the coconut meat inside doubles as dessert when we cut it". "Really "she asked dubiously. "Yeah, wait and see"
I watched as she made her way to the bathroom and signalled to the captain to play the music. I went to stand nonchalantly at the railing trying to mimic the Titanic scene , hoping she wouldn't notice my nervous shaky hands if I gripped tightly onto the railing. My heart was running a marathon and I was terrified something would go wrong even though I had been pedantic.
"What song are they playing" she whispered softly in my ear as she leaned against me."Day Goes By by Ananya Birla"" The lyrics are nice"she mumbled. We swayed to the music , taking in the wonderful scenery of the lush green islands dotted here and there.
"Bubble , do you know why I call Bubble? It's because I wanted to keep you in a bubble to stop you getting hurt all the time. I hated it when people took advantage of you when you were hurt . I hated it when people refused to help you and that's why I wanted to be a Florence Nightangle for you. Bubble , you taught me how to sacrifice things , got me into being eco friendly and adviced me properly. You always appeared at the start of all my milestones in life; the start of secondary school , the start of college and the start of my job. I missed you like crazy when I was abroad. I wanted to talk to someone who understood me and someone who would walk with me ." I took her hand in mine" not a day goes by for me without you . Bubble ,I want you to be happy because me. I want you to feel safe because of me. "
I knelt to the floor and took the ring out. "So Bubble, marry me please." I scanned her shocked face and prayed for a yes. I waited for her answer for what felt like ages, holding the ring out which felt awkward after a while with no response. Just I was about to put it away she asked "is the ring eco-friendly?" . " Yes it's from recycled silver so please accpect"
A few minutes later the setting sun reflected on her ring as I took a photo to post on Instagram .
