"Is there a right way to being strong or am I doing something wrong?"
Cold. That was the only word I could think of to explain the look in their eyes. Maybe it was all the horror stories I heard about the East South Community that blurred my judgment of them or maybe they just wanted to look intimidating in a clearly uncomfortable situation and place. Their faces held small smirks as the nudged each other and snickered under their breath. I hated them, and I hated that they were on our side of New York. My skinny jean clad legs made their way to the group of boys who were laughing at my angry expression.
"Can we help you, Beautiful?" A tall lanky boy asked with long and greasy brown hair pulled back into a ponytail.
"Yes, you can leave." I answered in a cold voice, pushing my long blonde hair behind my ear.
"Nice try but we were invited by your little leader, James. So go run along and play." The boy said with a sarcastic grin. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion, why would James invite the enemy to our land?
"What do you mean James invited you?" I demanded taking a step forward with my arms crossed in front of my chest.
"Take a step back, City sider." Another boy with red hair and freckles snarled at me.
"Don't call me that, Farm boy!" I said back, taking another step forward to piss him off. As got closer the red head boy dropped his backpack and raised his hands to push me back.
"Hey!" I jumped as a raspy voice yelled towards us.
"Anna, back off. They are here with reason." I heard James speak from behind me along with some other voice mumbling under his breath.
"No, no it's our fault. Sam stepped out of line." I turned around to see a guy pinning the red headed guy named Sam with an angry glare. The wind blew curly brown hair that was being held back by a faded bandana around, he had tattoos poking out from his black shirt and even more tattoos lined his arms and wrists. His green eyes met mine and he sent me an apologetic smile. I looked backed to James ignoring the curly haired stranger.
"What's going on?" My soft voice spoke with as much authority that I could muster. James smiled slightly at my tone before speaking.
"Anna, the community will be having a meeting later today that will explain everything. Go get some lunch you haven't eaten anything since the trip into the city yesterday afternoon." James said dismissing me with a friendly smile. I was about to refuse to leave until I was told what was going on first but a raspy voice cut me off.
"You should eat. You'll get weak." I glared up at the green eyes that stood a few feet from me. I clenched my jaw shut at his comment that seemed innocent enough but still pissed me off. I walked off making sure to hit the curly haired boys shoulder on my exit.
"Anna-" James started to scold me but I was already sprinting to the watch tower before he could continue. I could feel the anger pumping through my veins and my blood boiling as reached the ladder to the tower. I started up the tower making it to the top within a few minutes. The watch tower was my favorite place, it was basically a small cabin only three stories in the air. It had a small bathroom, even smaller kitchen and deck that wrapped around the whole cabin that included all the tools you would need to spot and kill a dangerous intruder. I reached the top to be greeted by Colin, the guard who is on today. We usually only have one guard on at a time during daylight time and two guards on during night watch. Our world wasn't really filled with dangerous situations, mostly communities robbing other communities for necessities that were getting harder and harder to find. I turned back to Colin and nodded his way.
"Windy up here today, huh?" I said with a friendly smile.
"Rather this than rain." Colin said with a nod back to me.
"That's for sure." I said with a small laugh.
"So what's up? I thought it was only me on duty this hour?" Colin asked with his brow furrowed.
"Yeah you are but I'm gonna cover for you. I heard Ms. Bonnie is making that really good ham steak so why don't you head down to the dinning commons for a bit." I offered already getting out the items I need to be on duty from my vans backpack that slouched down my back. I slide my gun into the back of my jeans and pulled a flattened granola bar from my jean pocket.
"Are you sure? You had duty yesterday?" Colin asked but you could tell he wanted to get out of here.
"Go get some grub." I said while nudging his shoulder. Colin laughed and headed down the ladder. I went inside the cabin to get a pair of binoculars and made my way back outside. I walked around the wrap around deck making sure everything was secure then went back to the front of the tower. I looked down at James talking to the other community. He playfully punched the curly haired boys shoulder with a content smile but watching this I felt the exact opposite of content.
