The bumpy ride in Mr Marlcaster's carriage had lasted a while and I had almost thrown up of motion sickness. But nonetheless, reaching home was worth the trouble.
Even from a distance, the castle's minarets towered over you, waiting for the right moment to devour you into their mystical walls. It was extremely intimidating but, nothing can scare the Princess Y/N. The backseat was bouncing up and down, owing to my handmaiden squealing and jumping in her seat.
"I can't wait to see all the handsome princes," she exclaimed with doe eyes. Shaking my head at her foolishness, I gazed out the window, towards the lush gardens and orchards of the Solomon Estate. The sky was glistening with stars and the darkness was wrapped over the earth like a blanket.
The grand, mahogany doors of the ballroom were pushed open as my name was announced. Keeping my back stiff as a fiddle, I descended down the red-carpeted staircase, my arms straight by my side. Keeping my gaze lowered, I picked up my gown and took my rightful place beside the King.
As soon as my father announced the commencing of the ball, I gracefully made my way to a cozy corner and stood, ready to spend the rest of the night evaluating my future subjects.
By far, the most crowded spot would be the one by the King. Smooth-talkers and greedy, cunning widows stood, ready to race the others to the King's heart and eventually, his throne. Clicking my tongue, I continued my scanning. Crème brulè and more royal delicacies of the kind posed, seductively, attracting kids and the elderly to scoop some, even if it was one spoon.
Giggling handmaidens would scurry by with their flower baskets, whispering to each other of how said prince was looking handsome. Guards standing by the entrance would burst into fits of loud laughter every now and then, clinking their glasses of ale, champagne and what not. Little satanic children would run mischievously by the entrance, zigzagging through the crowd, only to get caught in the end.
Red curtains adorned the windows, which embraced the whole lengths of the castle walls. Glass chandeliers the size of UFOs shimmered under the light. You could imagine the palace looked like a beacon in the middle of the woods with the contrast it provided with the night.
Sighing, I adjusted my glasses and headed to my father, only to halt when I saw him with three gentlemen. Although they looked close to my age, I had no memory of ever having seen them in the palace whatsoever. They wore black tuxes with swords secured in their sheaths by their side, each of them with their hand on it.
The oldest had the cheeky grin of a prince charming from a cinderella book and hazel eyes the size of buttons. The youngest, although the tallest, exuberated childish joy with his tiny smile. He had angular features but a boyish face and hands fidgeting at the pace of a vibrator. The middle one was the one that stood out the most. His facial features and jet-black hair had an eerie resemblance to mine.
Just as I was thinking all this, Haechan bumped into me, spilling the earlgrey tea he was carrying all over my dress.
"Oh goodness! I do wonder the reason behind my clumsiness," he said, gloomily, but then, stammering," uh, but, I'm sure I could help you clean this off. If you would be so kind as to follow me outside."
We went out to the gardens and near the Fountain of Aphrodite, when he halted and sat on a bench near the fountain, also putting down his tray.
With a wave of his hand, he gestured for me to take a seat and so I did. He wet a cloth from the fountain's water and then kneeled before me to wipe the stain from the bottom of my frock. Although I shouldn't have, I still wanted to ask him something.
"Haechan?"
"Yeah?"
"I was to-....Mari told me that you....you knew about...our betrothal...."
*silence**none of us moving*
I stared down and continued.
"I know grandpa meant it for my betterment and all, but I still don't know what made him think we would be ok with that. After all, we have remained friends since forever."
"Maybe that's why." He finally spoke." Maybe he knew we both know each other well and that's why we should be...you know, partners for life."
"But I can't...."
He looked up.
"I don't mean 'it's because I don't like you,' but I just.....it must be new to you too. But, hypothetically, if I were to be your wife, would you be ok with it?" I looked him in the eyes.
"Of course."
HUH?! What?!
"No, I don't mean it in the weird way...it's just that, since we're friends, shouldn't it be easier for us to do this? Like you said, we've known each other forever and so that means we are more comfortable with each other, so that's perfect for the 'living together' part. But as for love, because you are my friend and, maybe you don't think I will be able to do this, but I will cherish you more than anyone else could. I know now that you aren't all in for this because of which, I will do more than I can to prove that I can love you like anyone else."
He was still looking at me and for the first time in forever, he made my heart beat quicken. What is this feeling? And then I realized he was staring at my lips and we were way too close, so close that I could practically feel his breath on my skin and then.... We kissed.
I still remember that night crystal clear and what's more, I still cherish the first time I kissed my husband.
