The newness of the school had begun to fade as Miriam showed Mikael the large campus. He had a great memory, something he was always grateful for when moving to a new school but Miriam had been of great help. At first, he frowned at the idea of sitting at with her but she seemed to be friends with a couple of really nice boys.
The second bell rang and he walked towards AP Chemistry, one of the only classes he was looking forward to that year. He took a seat in the second row next to a boy he met at Miriam's table named, Kevin. Miriam sat in the row next to theirs, beside a pretty blonde girl he had never seen before.
"Hey Miri, what are you doing next Friday? Elle and I were planning to invite a few guys over," the girl said. Miriam stared at a window.
"Hello? Earth to Miriam?" the girl exclaimed loudly. Mikael turned towards the sound.
"Who's she?" Mikael asked Kevin nodding his head towards the blonde girl.
"That's Faye. The most popular girl at Camden. Don't get your hopes high," he said.
Miriam looked at her friend, "Oh. Sorry, Faye. I don't think I'll be able to clean up the service booths in time. It's our first event so we only have half the usual number of volunteers. And I have plans with Laura. Maybe next week?"
"All you think about is service. And Laura. She'd bad news you know. Think about your social life. If not for you, do it for us, please! We like hanging out with you!" Faye replied. Miriam shook her head, "You know I can't miss this."
"Quiet, everyone!" Mr. Richard's voice rang. Faye turned away from Miriam and stared at the whiteboard bitterly. Miriam sighed. As she turned her head towards the board, she caught Mikael looking at her. She smiled and he turned away to talk to Kevin.
This was the third time Miriam had to decline hanging out with her friends in a week. Who knew how many events she had missed — all those games of truth or dare, movie nights and beach picnics...
The lunch bell sounded and everyone got out of the classroom. Miriam walked up to a tall dark-haired girl leaning on a locker.
"Hey babe," the girl said.
Miriam replied, "Hey Laura".
They locked hands and the taller girl – Laura, brought Miram closer.
Miriam had backed up slightly, feeling a surge of heat through her fingers. It was the burning kind – it hurt. Laura moved a strand of Miriam's hair aside and whispered into her ears, "Relax." Miriam tried to calm down but the burning sensation had reached her elbows. Suddenly, Laura tightened her grip around Miriam's waist and pulled her against her body in a heated kiss. Miriam gasped and pushed Laura away.
"I told you I wanted to take things slow!' she exclaimed.
"It's been 3 months Miriam!" Laura replied harshly.
Miriam looked down at her hands. The burning hadn't stopped.
"I know how you're feeling... it's just-"
"You don't understand. I can't go on like this," Laura's eyes pierced into Miriam.
"I'm breaking up with you," Laura said, turning around and walking away.
Miriam brought her hands to her face and let out a shaky sigh. She walked to the bathroom, washed her face and gargled her mouth. That was not how she had wanted her first kiss with a girl to go. The bell rang again and Miriam walked to pick up her calculus books from her locker. She found Mikael and they walked to class together.
"What happened?" he asked noticing the frown forming on her face.
"Chemistry sucks," she said.
She let him go in first, dialed Faye's number into her phone and held it up to her ear. No reply.
She walked into the classroom a few minutes later.
