THE BOOK
By Andi Blair
The smell of the printed page filled the store like a happy memory.
“That’s $29.99 then please” said the Cashier.
Donna handed the lady her credit card and the lady swiped it through the scanner.
“Enter your number please” said the Cashier automatically.
Donna punched in her number and waited for the signal to leave the store, go a trillion miles into space, hook up with a satellite, say Hi, confirm her number and then come back down again with the good news all in a couple of seconds.
‘Free. Please take one.’ read a handwritten sign aiming at a small pile of books.
“What are these?” asked Donna with a slight frown as she waited.
“Free stuff. Take one. Everyone loves free stuff” said the Cashier with a smile as the Till confirmed Donna’s number and began to print out a huge receipt.
“Any good” said Donna.
The Cashier shrugged handing Donna the receipt but leaving the book she had bought on the counter. She stood for a moment and then decided to take one of the free books. She didn’t even look at the cover to see what the title was or what it was even about.
“Would you like a bag?” asked the Cashier.
“Please.” said Donna as the Cashier did as requested.
Leaving the store, Donna walked towards her Range Rover Evoqué and pressed the key fob, the headlights flashed twice and Donna knew that it was unlocked.
She closed the door behind her and the noise of the shopping mall car park was instantly drowned out.
She sighed and put her head back against the headrest for a few seconds.
