It wasn't that Annie Carter didn't like Karen; she hated Karen. Annie Carter, was a short-tempered 9-year-old with messy red hair and a sassy mannerism that had to go to school one day. Now, this, of course, is normal for most kids, but Annie couldn't think of a more unpleasant place than a public school, with its awful food and frightening teachers. She was totally satisfied with her dad and the books teaching her in her cozy apartment, that she used to live in with her dad only. Now, her new stepmom Karen just barged into Annie's life. She had just moved in with Annie and her dad and she's moving things around, messing up Annies' perfectly fine old life, acting as if she is part of the family now. Annie didn't ask for this; She was happy living with her dad and her dad only. Now, her stepmom had this idea to have Annie's dad work his job full-time at the factory. Now Annie has to go to a public school, when Annie had been homeschooled for three years! She thought it would be "helpful" for the family, Annie despised this idea, but it wasn't like she had a choice.

Annie woke up when Karen knocked on her door "Wake up, Annie!" Karen announced.

"Ugh," Annie murmured "do I have to?" Annie questioned.

"Yes. Now wake up and get ready for your first day of school," Karen responded.

When Karen left, Annie started to doze off again. Annie woke up to the sight of the sun's flashing rays coming through the window, the sun's rays brightened up the light green walls of her room. The only sound she heard in the small apartment was her father, Daniel Carter's loud alarm clock that sounds like the annoying sirens of police cars. Annie wakes up rubbing her eyes as her feet touch the soft tufts of her fur rug. She spots her calendar with pictures of different types of bugs on her desk and checks if it is the first day of school. To her disappointment, the calendar said it was Monday, September 23, the day that school starts on in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Annie walks lazily to the small apartment bathroom, hoping to be as late as she can be for school. She washes her freckled pale face with the chilly tap water, brushes her teeth, then changes into a dark green shirt with a fluffy orange sweater with stars over it and polka-dotted black leggings.

Annie walks into the kitchen and hears the popping sounds of oil on a hot pan. "You finally woke up, huh?" Karen asks in her unlikable voice, "Good morning!"

"Yeah, good morning," Annie responds in her best fake happy voice and rolls her eyes.

"Here you go," Karen hands Annie the plate with a sunnyside up egg that was burnt around the edges with toast and hands her a glass of milk.

"Thanks," Annie replies as she sits down at the black wooden table.

Karen walks over and tries to brush Annie's red hair, Annie couldn't help but start whining every time Karen tugs Annie's hair while she puts it in two tight braids, not because it hurt, but because she never wanted to give Karen an easy time with anything. She eats her breakfast as slow as she can, hoping it could prevent Karen from taking her to school.

"Good morning," Daniel says as he enters the kitchen all dressed up for work.

"Good morning, daddy!"Annie exclaimed, she smiles then gets up to give Daniel a big hug.

Daniel kisses Karen on the forehead and gets a piece of toast, he then goes to his office room, next to the bathroom, Annie follows him to find him getting his briefcase. "Dad, I don't want to go to school today," Annie says in a whiny voice. "Can I please, with cheese and a cherry on top, stay home?"

"No honey, we already met your new teacher and principal and registered for you at the school," Daniel replied impatiently, "You're going to make tons of friends, don't worry."
