“Where is he, John?” Dad demands. “Is he on the phone?”

“He just called. He’s near here, but in trouble,” John says, pulling his jacket on. “Got ambushed on his way in.”

Dad looked over at me, then at Anna and Cole. I could see the fight going on in his eyes. He knew that I didn’t want back in, but he needed me. I was a good Hunter, and he knew it. Dad looked at Cole then at Anna and I again. “I’m coming, Dad,” I say. “You can’t stop me.”

“Then I’m coming too, Mr. Dean,” Ann and Cole say at the same time.

“Nope,” John says, stopping my Dad from answering, looking at Anna.

“Why not?” Anna asks. “I know.”

John keeps a straight face as he tells her, “You aren’t trained. You’ll get yourself killed. And I don’t really want to be responsible for my cousin’s roommate’s death.”

Anna opens her mouth to protest but I cut her off. “She knows how to defend herself, guys. She can shoot a gun and fight. I made sure of that.” I get three blank looks from the men in the room. “I wouldn’t have chosen her as a roommate if she wasn’t. And I would’ve made sure anyway, you know, with who I am and who my family is.”

“Please?” Anna begs, giving her best puppy dog eyes. John gives her a curt nod and so does Dad. Smiling, she runs off to get a jacket and shoes.

“Thanks guys,” I say, walking around the three of them to get to my shoes. Cole’s arm shoots out and catches me around the waist. “Let go,” I say, twisting his arm above my head. “We have important business to attend to.” I grab my boots from the door and lean against the wall to tie them. “Who’s car are we taking?”

“Mine,” John and Dad say at the same time. They glare at each other.

“We’ll take both cars. Not all of us can fit in the Impala, Dad,” I negotiate, smiling.

Cole and Dad talk in whispers with John listening in. I roll my eyes and smile a little at them, as I open the closet. I look through the jackets, so focused I didn’t notice Cole come up from behind me.

“Hey Zoi,” he says, putting his arms around me, resting his chin on my head.. “Are you okay?”

“Are you calling me Zoi now?” I ask, laughing quietly.

“You like it?”

“Not quiet sure,” I say, leaning my head back against his chest. “Which jacket?”

“You’re worried about fashion at a time like this?” He asks, laughing, the sound resonating through his chest. “Which one is the one your Dad gave you last year?” I pull a jean jacket from off one of the hangers. “Yah, that one.”

“Come on you two,” John says. “It’s time to leave.”

I turn around in Cole’s arms and look up at him, wrapping my arms around his neck. His blue gray eyes glow in the dim light coming from the hallway behind the open door. Cole’s dark blond hair is neatly trimmed but at the same time messy, and sticking up in the back.

“You’re not mad at me, are you?” Cole asks. “For not telling you about being a Hunter?”

I smile a whisper of a smile before standing on my toes to lightly kiss his cheek. He turns his head just as my lips touch his cheek and catches my lips with his. I pull away, smiling, a light blush forming on my cheeks.

“Come on, we gotta go,” John says, pushing his way out the door.

Cole and I break apart and follow everyone outside. Anna locks up and we walk down the stairs and outside. Once outside, I skip excitedly toward the Impala. “I get to go with Dad!”
