Konnagar Devpara Puja festival  2019

According to myth, once upon a time, the Asurs took over the world, defeating the Gods and made them to decline of heaven. The leader of the Asurs was a shape-shifter, who was able to take the form of many animals; one of them is 'Mahish' (Buffalo). This was his favorite disguise in war. That is why he had the name of 'Mahishasur' This invincible asur wanted to have the immortality against any leaving creature on Earth; so he started penance for Lord Brahmma, the all-father of every life-form on Earth. Soon, Lord Brahmma was pleased for the devotion of this asur and he appeared to him, wishing to grant him a boon. Mahishasur wished to have the power of immortality, but Lord Brahmma became anxious about the future of what this ruthless Asur is exactly going to do with this boon. He refused to give him immortality, on the other hand he was bound to the sacred oath he has taken to fulfill his wish. So, finally he sorted out a plan. He granted him immortality against any male warriors on the battlefield; no male can ever win against Mahishasur. Back in those days, no female ever took part in the battle. So, when the aged Deity blessed him with the boon, "No male of any species anywhere, in any form can defeat you in the battle", Mahishasur interpreted it as a gift from the God, accepted it cordially as a boon of immortality and went back happily to his kingdom.
