Calum knew it would be a bad day when he walked past Ashton's office to see the man already fuming, having already heard him yelling from down the hall. He scurried past and fled down the steps, hoping to avoid Ashton until breakfast but was only surprised to seen Luke, Harry, and another man, who's back was turned to him, standing in the living room.
He returned Luke's good morning, even when it really wasn't, and turned into the kitchen. He tried not to let Ashton or the three men distract him, blowing out a deep puff of air before getting to work. He wasn't as cautious with his sounds, knowing if he was a little louder it wouldn't bother anyone since everyone was awake.
He tried not to think too far into the other men, mostly concerned with Ashton and his temper for the day. Ashton's anger was always odd. Sometimes it meant Calum having to be invisible, sneaking around the house and behind closed doors to get his things done and hoping Ashton wouldn't notice him;those days Ashton never sought him out.
Some days it meant Ashton wanted something to take his anger out on-someone to take his anger out on. The days where Calum had to take what was given to him and agree with Ashton no matter what, even if the hurtful words were lies. Those days lead into others because he'd have to buy more makeup to cover his "mistakes" and he'd have to learn how to walk on his other foot if he got a limp.
The days that meant his nights were spent alone on the couch, if he was strong enough to get up, or the floor he was left on;or the nights that were spent in tears and loud pleas that bounced off the walls until Ashton came down and banged on the door, sending Calum back into himself silently until Ashton deemed him fit to come from the bad boy room and back into his normal circle of life.
He placed everything on the tray, grabbing it into his hands and leaving the kitchen. He froze in his spot, dropping the tray in his hands when he met those cruel green eyes, lips parting in shock. Luke and Harry both looked up at the sound of clatter, Calum catching up to what he did. It was too late though, Ashton was already by his side and looking down at him with furious eyes;yet he still hadn't moved or looked away from Michael, who was staring back all the same.
He dropped to the floor with a whimper, coddling his face that had been struck. He held back his tears, knowing it would only bring another hit as he sniffled out an apology, speaking louder when Ashton gripped his hair. The man scoffed, throwing Calum back onto the floor before going up the stairs. No one moved for a moment, Calum still trying not to break down since he could feel Harry and Michael staring at him.
Luke was by his side in an instant, not bothering to mind the mess that got onto his pants as he began picking up the broken dishes.
"Are you two brain dead?" He looked over his shoulder as he picked the tray up, "Clean this shit up, you Neanderthals."
They both moved to listen, Luke setting the tray onto the counter before going to help Calum up. He brushed his hand through Calum's hair gently, almost sending the boy into a fit of tears from the comfort but decided on turning his face away from Luke and shaking his head.
