안년,에밀리 here with the continuation of Vowels and Consonants: How to Write and Pronounce 101

I MUST WARN YOU⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️

This lesson on is where everything gets a bit confusing. (To tell you the truth, my brain had gotten tangled tons of times when I first started learning 한글 twelve years ago.)

*Feel free to post question if you are confused on my wall or on my works.*

Without further ado, let's get started.....

Vowels and its Pronunciation in Detail

Root Vowel ㅣ

ㅣis known as the most basic vowel in the Hangul system, making it the root got other vowels.

Draw a vertical line just like the letter I in the English alphabet and pronounce i (ee) as a vowel. That's ㅣin Korean. Still don't get it?

Pronounce the word tree.
ㅣis pronounced like the two ending letters ee.

and

In this alphabetic system, new Vowels and consonants are created by adding more strokes to the root letter. Take this two for example: ㅏand ㅓ. Don't worry, I will be here to guide my lovelies along the way.

Adding a line on ㅣ

An additional stroke on the right side is pronounced as 'a' as in the word father while a stroke on the left side is pronounced as 'eo' as in the word up.

ㅑand ㅕ

Adding more strokes on consonants makes the pronunciation stronger. Two additional strokes on a basic vowel always means 'y + original pronunciation'.

Two additional strokes on the right side are pronounced as 'ya' while two additional strokes on the left side are pronounced as 'yeo'.

Fake Vowel ㅡ

As I have mentioned in my previous lesson, Hangul has a so-called fake consonant ㅇ, which doesn't make a sound. Likewise, vowels also have a so-called fake vowel ㅡ, which doesn't make any sound.

*Note: Some Hangul lessons might teach you that ㅡ is pronounced as "oo" as in the word goose, but they're wrong.*

How to Pronounce ㅡ

- Prepare a candy.
- Make the same shape with your mouth as you would pronounce ㅣ.
- Start pronouncing ㅡ and pull back your tongue.
Success!
*Practice makes perfect.*

ㅡ for no vowel

그 as in 'grrr'
스 as in 'station'
프 as in 'present'
트 as in 'train'

ㅗ and ㅛ

Remember what I said about the purpose of additional strokes? Yes, it's pronounced as 'y + original pronunciation'. Two additional strokes on top is pronounced as 'yo' as in the word yogurt while only one additional stroke on top is pronounced as 'o' as in the word open.

ㅜ and ㅠ

Apply the concept above to ㅜ and ㅠ.

ㅜ as in root
ㅠ as in youth

The next lesson will be titled as "Introduction to Korean Pronunciation Rules Part One: 받침,Twin Consonants & Vowels, W-Vowels, and Combination + Combination 101."

Stay tuned!
