After a few months Kate’s casts came off and she could walk again.  We convinced the teachers to let Kate stay at school and not go away. We also had a school disco to raise money for a Seeing Eye dog, his name is Kovu.

He goes everywhere with her. When in class he sits at her feet, always there and always protective. Once Kye came up behind her and jabbed her sides, scaring her. She yelped and tried to hit him, but he moved. Then Kovu jumped up and started growling at Kye. The whole class was in stiches laughing.

“Hey Emma”

“Oh Hi Kye, Wassup?”

“Nothing much, but I need your help”

“Kay” I say looking up from my book. It was really good. So I was in the library reading it.

“So you know how I missed Kate’s birthday?”

“Yeah”

“Well since I’m her boyfriend I sorta have to get her something” His cheeks were glowing bright red. It was hilarious.

“So you need my help finding something, I presume?” I swear I saw him flinch. I bit back a laugh.

“Yeah” he says through gritted teeth. He looked like I’d just asked him for his left lung! “So meet at Sweet Life after school?”

“Yeah” I say as he turns away. I look back to my book and start reading, then I remember. “Hey, wait! Do you know where Geoff is? I haven’t seen him around lately”

He laughs and turns round. “Don’t worry he misses school all the time. I’m sure he’s fine”

‘Yeah I guess” Even though I said that, I couldn’t shake the gut feeling that it was the start of something really wrong.

I walk in Sweet Life café and see Kye at one of the tables in the back corner. This shop is fully of lollies and sweets. It used to be called Moo’s café but new owners took over and changed it. I walk over and tap him on the shoulder.

“Oh Emma, hi, you actually came!”

“Yeah well, you needed my help so I came to help” I say dropping my shoulder bag and sliding into the chair across from Kye.

“I hope you don’t mind, I ordered you a milkshake and a gluten free burger.”

“Thanks”

“So you think we better get going?” Kye says just ask our order arrives.

“Yep!” I say grabbing my bag and holding my hand out for the burger.

It took us a while but we found a gift, a silver locket with a picture of Kye on one side and picture of her first love on the other.

“Do you seriously think we should put a picture of a book in her locket?”

“Yes, she’s going to love it! No need to thank me.” I smile and wave as I run through the rain to my mums car.

Hmmmmm…… Maybe I should send Geoff a Facebook message. He should get it. He’s probably faking sickness. That what Kate says he always does. I hope she’s right.
