Have you ever woke up in a place where you think you've been there for almost years? Every time I woke up I get that kind of feeling. I have been inside this cold room for almost a year. I still lay in this old bed that had been racking for almost a week because of its age. I don't really remember my age at the moment but I know to myself that I was old enough to meet the Father in heaven.
I sit and lean my back at the bed and gaze at the window looking at the dawn in the horizon.
Staring at the peaceful view I suddenly felt a nostalgia of my early days. Suddenly my little granddaughter enter the room wearing a colorful dress with sparkly ribbon on her head.
She is Claire Ann Diaz and she just turned nine years old last month if my memory is not deceiving me. Claire is a cheerful and playful child that makes me forget all the ache of my body. Her mother Aileen want her daughter to be independent so each day Claire had been visiting me alone in this hospital near the ocean. My son? John Flynn seems to have been busy these days, after all he just been promoted as the new CEO of his company recently so I can't blame him for not coming here to see me. As I smile at my granddaughter coming toward me, in my surprise Claire had jumped to me in order to give a hug and I return a kiss in her forehead.
"Greetings Grandma" she said.
"Hello my sweetest Angel"
I see the confusion in her eyes, "No Grandma you are Angel, not me, your name is Angel Evan Diaz" But I stayed quiet and just give her a stare and look outside the window signalling that she should also glance.
I take a little detour and look at my grandchild and as I expected she was amaze by the beautiful scenario, but not as good as I expected, she can't take her eyes of it and I think little by little she was being suck up by the scene beyond the sea, even I was having a feeling of happiness looking at the dawn but not as happy when I look at my little Angel.
"Say Grandma, what are you thinking when you saw that? I saw you earlier glancing outside the window and it seems like you are in a deep thought?" Claire ask with a even more bright eyes than she had earlier.
"Just my days" I answered with a tiny bit of nostalgic feeling in my heart.
"Why?" she ask with a lot of curiosity in her eyes "What is dawn for you?"
Before I answer her question, I took a grapes and eat them with Claire that had a cute eager eyes to hear a story.
"Do you want me to tell you my story?" I ask with a bit of pleasure in the tone.
"Yes, Grandma please..." she cried as if like I would say no to my precious Angel. "Fine, the sunrise holds the memories of me and your grandfather; Xavier Ivan Diaz" I said as I started the tale.
At 4:00 am and all of them are getting ready for the new day. "Mom, I will go to the ocean with my friends right now!" Shouting as if the whole neighbourhood is awake.
"Keep it down, dear... and what? It's still 4:00 am and the waves must be stronger than the average that you can take". She said with a worrisome tone. "It's way too dangerous Eve!"
"I'll be fine Mom, I'll see you later" I replied with a assurance in my eyes so that she will not worry too much, after all I'm already 18 and she still see me as a 5 years old kid that plays in the mud every weekend and the girl who cries whenever I leave the house just for 5 minutes. Goodness she spoiled me too much that's why I can't find a boyfriend, I might find myself old without a single child on my side, I said to myself as I walk away in our house.
"Aren't you bit early today Hue?" I was surprise to hear my old nickname. Ivan is the only one called me that because I eat to much 'I might huge', he said. I looked at the direction where the voice came from, but no one is there. "Weird..." And I walk again to go to the beach.
"Feels good..." I whispered in the cold breeze that just passed me. I walk through the cave and came existed in the other side where I can see the beautiful sunrise clearly and I wait there patiently. Later on as I smell the sea water below the sun started to rise and created a beautiful view that's seem so enchanted. As I was being drawn by the combination of red, blue black and white. I see the school of birds flying freely as if they were playing with the visible stars left in the sky creating a better painting than the one created by the famous painters in the world. As the sun rises I heard a scratching noise which startled me and made me loss my footing. I was waiting for me to reached the salt water but the moment I opened my eyes I saw a man holding my waist.
"Hey, Hue... how have you been?" he greeted."Van? I mean... Is that really you?
"Same old handsome prince of yours." I hit his chest for joking like that.
I can't explain what I felt right now, the pleasure had been piled up when I see his face and now I heard his voice. Looking at his face while the dawn still in place as if the time freezes and the mysterious feeling rises while the light of the sun is touching his lovely face. In joyous I hug him so tight... My childhood friend and my first Love.I look at her and get entertained by that little face she had, she was so focused on my story so I decided to stop a little bit to tease her and watch her reaction.
"Then? What happened next? Grandma? Why did you stop Grandma?" she asked irritable. "Come on continue your little love story with grandpa." She seem so eager to know the story. Well Van dies when she was still 2 years old so I can't blame her for not being able to remember him.
"Your story stop at the best part, you meanies!" she complained and pouted, but inside of me I was blissful, because she was adorable.
"Okay, I got it my Angel I'll tell you the continuation".
"Yahoo, but grandma my name is Claire, Angel belongs to you".
I closed my eyes and think of my little time, but suddenly a big bang surprise my deaf ears.
"SURPRISE!!!" my family shout.
John was here and even his wife Aileen and the picture of my handsome husband; Van!
"Happy 80th Birthday Mom" they greeted
"I Love you" my son had said it with the feeling of affection in his tone.
"It seem like our daughter had successfully distracted you" Aileen giggles "although she completely forget about the surprise."
"But why? How about work?" I ask worried.
"Your Birthday happens once a year and there's no way we will miss one of them" John replied assuring me that there's nothing bad will happen.
"Grandma, Happy Birthday to you... Happy Birthday to you... Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday... Happy Birthday to you..." My little Angel sang in an attractive tone that almost melt my whole existence.
"Okay, Grandma blow your candles." She announced cheerfully."Aren't I a bit old for that? I said with a kidding tone.
As I blow the candle the little blissful scenario that I see is slowly fading like a smoke. The room had become even colder and I can't move my whole body, my eyes is blurring despite of the reading glass that I'm wearing. The next moment I opened my eyes is my son crying shouting the name that he used to call me, "Ma?" he cries and cries. I see myself on the white bed, full of hose to support the little life I had. I look around and saw my sweetest Angel, Claire that looks at lot like me when I was at her age, she is crying hard asking my body to call her "sweetest Angel" and continue raising her voice until her face full of tears that made her beautiful face shines. Aileen kneel on the bottom of my bed trembling in sadness and while hugging my son and keep shouting; Ma.
I continue to watch and observe them and then I realize that I was comatose for 7 years since my 80th Birthday, that I have been dreaming of my old memories ever since then. But now I know that Van is in front of me is not a dream.
"Hue? How are you? Let's go."
