Yui absentmindedly scribbled a poorly drawn cat on the corner of her paper, not paying any mind to the lecture happening in the background, and counted the minutes until she could finally go home. She suddenly snapped back to reality when the teacher dismissed the class and the other students began packing their supplies up. She shoved her notebook into her bag and excitedly rose from her seat, quickly waving goodbye to her friends as she made her way to the subway station.
Yui was staring out of the window of her subway car when she was hit with a sudden pang of uneasiness, the primal sensation of being watched. She glanced over her shoulder to take a look at the only other person in the car with her. An attractive young woman with light olive skin and curly hair dyed a wild shade of blue. She was dressed in designer clothes and had her hair pulled up into a side ponytail. The woman casually smiled and then made her way over to Yui to greet her.
"Sorry for staring, I was admiring that beautiful hair of yours."
"Ah, that's-"
Before Yui could finish, the woman leaned uncomfortably close to her and gently stroked her jet black hair.
"I wish mine was straight, it's such a pain having curly hair."
The woman smiled again and then reached out to shake Yui's hand.
"My name is Kai. Kai Tangata."
Yui looked down at Kai's hand, taking a moment to admire her well-manicured nails before grasping it and shaking it twice.
"I'm Yui Hamada"
Yui grabbed her school bag as the car suddenly came to a stop and the station was announced.
"Oh, this is my stop. It was nice meeting you Ms. Tangata"
Yui stepped onto the platform and started to walk away.
"Call me Kai! Goodbye Yui"
"Bye..."
When Yui turned back to respond to Kai the subway car was empty and she was nowhere to be found.
"Kai."
As she walked home, Yui pondered why such a glamorous woman would be talking to a plain schoolgirl like her. She had no outstanding features and was often described as average-looking. She had straight, shoulder length hair with blunt cut bangs across her forehead. Her skin was pale and her fashion sense was questionable at best.. Yui assumed that the woman was foreign and wasn't aware of Japanese etiquette, which would explain her very forward behavior.
The woman was on the subway every day that week, at the same time. She made small talk with Yui, occasionally getting personal with prying questions. Yui began to enjoy her company and eventually became friends with her. One day Kai invited Yui to have lunch with her and she happily accepted.
"Meet me at La Idèe Fixe Cafe at 2:00 on Saturday"
"I'll be there!", Yui yelled as she bounded off of the train.
When the day came around Yui put on her cutest outfit, a pink graphic tee that read "KAWAII" across the chest in a dainty white font, an all black skater skirt, and knee high socks. As she made her way downstairs she heard her mother slam a drawer shut and call for her.
"Yui! Did you borrow my diamond necklace?"
"No, Mama!"
She heard her mother mutter to herself and then continue her frantic search through her drawers. She said goodbye to her parents and happily made her way out the door and down to the cafe. She saw Kai sitting at an outdoor table and made her way over to her.
As they ate their lunch Yui noticed a sparkle near Kai's chest. Kai was wearing an expensive-looking necklace, similar to her mother's. Odd timing but Yui assumed it was a coincidence.
"That's a lovely necklace, where'd you get it?"
"It was a gift from a friend", Kai said grinning.
A few weeks later Yui stepped into her usual subway car and noticed that Kai wasn't there. That's odd. She quickly sent Kai a text asking where she was and slid her phone back into her pocket. As she walked into her house, Yui felt as if something was off. Her suspicion appeared to be true when neither of her parents responded to her greeting.
"I'm home!"
No response.
"Hello? Mom? Dad?"
Silence.
She made her way throughout the house, turning on lights as she went. She stopped dead in her tracks when she reached her parent's bedroom door and noticed a dark puddle pooling out from under the door. She slowly pushed the door open and flipped on the light, shrieking in horror at the sight of her parent's blood splattered around their bedroom. They had both been gutted and had their intestines wrapped around their throats. A strong scent of iron and rotting meat filled her nostrils and instantly made her gag. She darted into the restroom and while gripping the bowl until her knuckles turned white, puked up everything she had eaten that day.
Yui made her way back into the hall where she dropped her bag, grabbed her cell phone, and began dialing 119 when she heard a voice ring out in the silent house.
"Yui?"
Kai. Yui dropped her cell phone and sprinted down the stairs to the front door, nearly crashing into Kai.
"Kai! Thank god you're here!"
"Are you okay? What's going on?"
"My parents-"
Yui was about to respond when she was hit with a sudden realization. How does she know where I live? Yui suddenly remembered the ring, slowly pulled away from Kai, and looked up at her.
"Your parents?"
A sinister smile creeped across Kai's face. Yui's then noticed the blood splattered on Kai's collar and her eyes widened until they were nearly bulging out of her head. She turned to run and grab her phone but Kai caught her arm and tightly gripped it. She was a lot stronger than she appeared.
"Where are you running off to Yui?"
Kai swiftly tugged Yui towards her and brought a rag out from her pocket, shoving it into Yui's face. There was a faint, sweet smell, and then nothing.
Yui slowly opened her eyes and surveyed her surroundings. She moved to wipe her eyes and quickly realized that she was tied up. The memory of the sight and smell of her parent's viscera hit her like a ton of bricks and she began sobbing hysterically.
"Help! Somebody help me!"
