"Didn't See It Coming" by My Brothers and I
I never believed in love at first sight.
The day had started like any other. It was late September and fall already seeped into the crisp morning air. I stood at the top of the hill for a minute, taking a moment before rushing from my previous class to the next. The trees on campus were peppered with shades of orange and red, the sidewalks already covered in leaves.
The auditorium class was only half full by the time I got to the building and I took a seat on a nearby edge. Class wasn't scheduled to start for another 5 minutes, so I pulled out my notebook and observed as the class slowly filled up with tired students. A tall guy with black hair took a seat next to me and gave me a sleepy smile. He wore blue jeans and a thick, lined denim jacket over a red shirt.
"Hey, do you know if we have homework due on Wednesday?" he asked.
"This one? Yeah. 8.1 through 8.4"
"Damn it. I'm Chris, by the way" he offered his hand and I shook it.
That was the start to a rather unusual friendship. We'd bitch about Math to each other and try to make plans to hang out, which always seemed to get thwarted by school or life. November rolled around before I stepped into his house for the first time.
"Dude!" he greeted me, opening the door "Okay, so I got a shit ton of chips and the PS4 set up"
My first impression of the house was how warm and inviting it felt. Chris decided against moving out, and chose to commute almost an hour to school instead. I could understand why. The house was a home, decorated with soft blankets and all sorts of memories. I met his mom, who was busy with work but took a moment to laugh with us about a particularly cute dog she'd given shots to earlier that day.
We sat in the couch for a while, killing away in some videogame and laughing too loudly. Chris sucked at the game but I was having a blast.
"I'm home!" a young voice echoed from behind us.
Fell in love with a girl who's a few years younger
Was a sister of a friend, didn't see it coming
I was hanging with him when I heard the door open
"In here" Chris yelled back, pausing the game and giving me a smile "One sec"
I turned around when I heard the soft footsteps stop behind us. There stood a black-haired girl with a backpack slung over one shoulder and a bright smile.
"Where's dad?" she asked Chris, not even acknowledging me.
"He's out with Uncle John" he explained before turning to look at me "Oh, this is Morgan. Morgan, that's my little sister Lauren"
Then she walked into the room with a smile and that's when
Her eyes looked at me and said quietly
Don't leave
We made eye contact. Hers reflecting her surprise, and I realized she hadn't noticed anyone else in the room until Chris pointed it out. Her bright green eyes softened and she smiled once again. I felt my breath catch in my throat.
In the moment I knew that it was all over
I can't say I ever really believed in love at first sight, but it was almost instant.
An electric feeling spread through my body, as if it was being pumped by my heart like blood. Little strikes of lightening travelled through my chest, down my arms, pooling in the palms of my hands before shooting off to the tips of my fingers.
