I glanced up at the microwave to check the time, my eyes taking forever to focus having stared at the papers for so long. 3 hours in and I'm only halfway done with this essay. It was due tomorrow morning at 8:30, too. Well that's just great.

Reluctantly, I stood up and walked over to the fridge, getting a cup of cold water. I took a sip of the water before walking to the couch, grabbing the remote off the glass coffee table as I sat down. Flipping through the channels, I finally decided on watching the news. Never let me down before, why would it now?

The man on the screen rambled on about a burglary at the mall down the street that occurred this morning. He switched subjects to talk about global warming, and it was clear that he was putting off saying something.

"So boring," I mumbled, picking up the remote. I was about to change the channel when suddenly he changed subjects again. This one grabbed my attention.

"Alex Wells, having been quiet for months, is back and killed another innocent girl. The body of Layla Brown was found with burn marks all down her body, and many stab wounds to her chest were identified. On her left calf a lowercase 'a' and 'w' were engraved, the only evidence leading us to the murderer," the news reporter explained, quickly glancing up at the camera.

"Alex Wells is getting better at erasing his trail each time. We have police from other cities coming in to help find him. Alex goes by many names and changes his appearance to hide himself, so you never know when he's near. You might have seen him the other day and would never know."

I stared at the tv in shock as pictures of his past identities flashed on the screen and the reporter explained further. Why was I just hearing of him? Isn't this something everyone should be aware of?

"We don't know what Alex is trying to accomplish, if anything, but we advise everyone to be careful. Refrain from putting too much trust into anyone you've just met, you can never be too safe," he concluded.

The reporter started to talk about upcoming storms in areas nearby but I wasn't listening any more. I shut off the tv and jumped off the couch, spilling my water in the process. I'll clean it up later, I decided, quickly going back to the table to complete my report. I was suddenly more excited for tomorrow than I should be.

Call me crazy, but my first day as a police officer was gonna be interesting, and I am not missing it for anything. After all, I've always been good at solving mysteries.

"Finally!" I yelled, placing my papers in a neat pile and putting them into the correct folder. I glanced at the microwave's clock once more. 1:30am, not as late as I thought I would be staying up.

With newfound energy, I ran to the counter to grab a towel. Ok, maybe not ran, but it was a step up from barely lifting my feet off the floor.

Maneuvering my way through my dark dorm was a struggle. The only light came from above where I was working on my essay. Having been in this dorm for years now, you'd think I knew where everything was. Wrong.

I stubbed my toe on one of the bar stools, falling to the floor and landing with a loud thud. While trying to get up, I attempted to use the stool and lift myself from the floor. It was a bad idea, the stool came crashing down on top of me.

After finally getting up from the floor, I set out for the couch. Only problem is that there's a step down from where the table was to the living room, and I fell once more. I got up and finally made it to the water. Cleaning up the spill, I left the rag on the table. I was over that dumb spill.

I made my way to my room and hit at the wall, trying to find the switch. Finally, the room became flooded with light. Changing into my pajama shorts and a t-shirt that belonged to my brother, I walked through the mess on my floor and jumped on my bed.

I got back up and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and clean my face. After doing my nightly routine, I could finally sleep. The best feeling in the world was sleeping before an important day after getting so much done.

Well, I guess it couldn't be considered sleeping the day before, it was officially 2:25 in the morning. I really need to fix my sleep schedule.

Getting under the sheets, I got comfortable and thought about everything that would happen tomorrow. Today, I mean. My eyes began to feel too heavy to open and I allowed myself to fall asleep.

Chapter one complete!! Ok, so I'd just like to point a couple things out and say a few things.

One, I'm 13. I don't want anyone coming here to read a story and expecting a perfect storyline, perfect grammar, and a perfect writing style. I'm 13!! I have so many things to learn and so many things to experience!! You think I've done any of these things? No, everything I'm learning is through imagination, which I don't have much of, and research. And my style of writing is pretty bad, I already know.

Two, just because I'm young doesn't mean I'm fragile and don't know anything. I'm aware that things aren't perfect, but correct me!! Please, how can I get better with no help? Now don't go pointing out my every flaw, but I WANT constructive criticism.

Three, I'm a busy girl. School is crazy and I don't get too much homework, but I have events and clubs and responsibilities which come before writing. I'm sorry, but that's just how it is.

Sorry for wasting your time with that really long Author's Note, but I just needed to say it. Hopefully the next chapter will be longer for you guys.

Next Chapter Estimated Publish Date: December 15th
