I sat on the soft carpeted floor of my bedroom.
My pj pants were stained with energy drinks and Dorito chip dust, but I didn't mind
My eyes were glued to the tv screen in front of me, the controller in my hands and my tongue slightly sticking out of my mouth in concentration.
17 hours, 24 minutes, 37 seconds
I haven't moved
I haven't slept
I haven't been to the bathroom
But I didn't mind
This is where I belonged. sitting on my bedroom floor gaming. living off energy drinks and take out food. spending eternity in my pyjamas. I haven't showered in two days
I was currently playing online. risky business
My headset may be on, but I haven't said a word, in fear that the other boys on my team will find out I'm a girl
That's the thing about gaming. you have to be a boy or you can't play. There isn't a choice. My PSN account was spammed with disturbing messages from boys. it was a sickening sight
They would tell me to 'get back in the kitchen' and they would call me a 'who're' and 'slut'
It was disgusting
Did You know, women only make up 6% of the gaming industry due to sexual harassment and verbal abuse?
I do
But I still don't mind
One day, I'm going to be apart of that 6%, no matter what I have to deal with. I'll push through it
I plan on getting a degree in media designs from university, before working as a level designer for EA studios.
Well, that's what I plan...
I've applied for an internship over at EA studios. That means that while I'm at school, I can work over at EA to get some experience.
Great, huh?
Not quite
My parents can't afford to send me to England. which means that this has all gone
But I don't intend on giving up yet.
I've talked to my schools guidance counsellor, Mr Clarkson, and he's helping my family and I work it out
So, I still have a slight chance...right?
There's a knock on my door and my mums voice comes through the door.
"Tayla? Sweetie? you should come out of your room. Maybe have a shower?'
"I'll shower when I get the final kill!" I yell back, not taking my eyes off the screen.
I hear a sigh "please? Your father and I had plans to go to dinner and we don't want you to stay locked in your room"
I groaned "fine"
I stood up and walked over to the ps4, ignoring the pins and needles that surged up my legs.
I turned off the console before throwing my controller on my bed and bounding through my bedroom door and down the stairs.
I waltzed into the kitchen where my mum stood at the counter. She was scratching at the stains on the counter trying to remove then one way or another.
"Mum?"
"Ah, Tayla! Now" she began, grabbing a note and pushing into my hands "this is the name of the restarting we are going to, this is the restaurants phone number. This is my number, and this is your fathers number. And then this is the hospital, police, fire brigade and auntie Sally, okay?"
I stood in shock as she listed the numbers on the note.
"I'm fifteen. I can take care of myself" I said, rolling my eyes and putting the note on the counter
"Aww I'm just worried" she said, grabbing me in a hug
My dad walked into the kitchen just as she let me go 'ready?'
My mother nodded and walked up to his side before she turned back to me
"If you need anything, just call me"
"Okay" I said, becoming slightly frustrated "now go enjoy yourselves"
They stepped out of the room and finally, out of the house. I closed the door behind them and quickly locked it, before skipping down the front hall and jumping onto the couch
I switched on the tv and began to channel search.
There really isnt much on. just some cooking shows and late night stuff. nothing that I was interested in.
"Now, what you want to do it take your whisk and-" instructed the guy on the cooking show
How come no one on these shows ever measures how much of something they use?
I laughed to myself and grabbed the laptop off the coffee table. I switched it on and went straight onto my designs
When I decided I wanted to work as a level designer, I found out that I'm going to need a portfolio of my work to show.
So, I started to work on levels. the best ones are the ones I put into my portfolio.
I spent the next hour or so, placing different obstacles into my little level. building and designing and creating.
As you can tell, there really isn't much for me to do on a Sunday night.
I sighed and switched off the tv, switched off my laptop and layed down on the couch. I turned over and stared up at the roof.
I have a meeting with my guidance counsellor in the morning with my parents about the whole internship situation.
I'm hoping something good happens. Maybe Mr Clarkson had found a way to get me over there. maybe he's Heard from EA about the internship.
The clock ticked 11:11. I closed my eyes and wished tightly
But really, there isn't much I can do
