Sass Monkeys and Early Mornings

Let me tell you a story. Once, there was a girl named Elsie. She was adorably dorky, with long hair, dyed blue, with green eyes and a crooked smile. She was average in height, average in looks, and above average in sense of humour. A regular little sass monkey.

At the age of 16, she had been dating Ben for just over a year. He was tall, funny, smart, handsome and perfect. Elsie didn't know how she had managed to land someone as wonderful as him.

Morning broke in through the window like an unwanted stranger, heavy handed and unwelcome in its trespass. Elsie opened her eyes and rolled over, snuggling up to Ben's side. He was allowed to stay on Friday nights, because it wasn't a school night.

He opened one eye. "Why are you awake?" he murmured, before closing his eye again. A minute or so later he began to snore. El smiled. Days like this made everything else bearable. She was having problems at school. Emily, a girl in her class, was being really bitchy, and most of El's friends were following suit. If only Ben went to her school. He went to a private school in the city. They had met over Facebook, through a mutual friend El knew from her art class, which was about half an hour away, with a really good tutor her Mum knew through the gallery she worked at. It was expensive, but El paid for half with the money from her part time job at the cafe near her house. It meant that she didn't have as much time for her friends anymore, which was why they were taking Emily's side, but what could she do? All she seemed to have was her art and Ben.

~~~~~~~~
After the perfect weekend with Ben, school inevitably came on Monday morning.  As Elsie got ready to school, she found herself  hoping that today would be better. "Just smile and laugh and everything will be fine," she told herself, as she grabbed an apple and ran for the bus.
It wasn't fine. First period, Alexis sat with Emily and ignored her. That continued all day. Then at lunchtime, when she tried to sit with them, Emily walked up. "You can't sit here anymore. I mean, it isn't like we actually like you. Leave us alone, you freak."
And that was how Elsie found herself sitting alone in the library. Her phone buzzed: a text from Ben.
How did everything go today?
Fine, she lied. You were right.
See? I told you.
She sighed and put her phone back in her bag. She didn't know how to tell him what was really happening.
~~~~~~

El walked through the door and dumped her bag on the table. Hard. Everything fell out and spread across the floor and as it did, the tears started falling. It had been 4 days now of exactly the same thing. Sitting alone in the library. And her art tutor had been really unimpressed with the piece she presented that week. But tomorrow was Friday. She was going to Ben's for the night. Everything would be okay.

As she pulled her work skirt on, her phone rang.

"Hey, Elephant."

"Don't call me that, Ben!" she laughed.

"Look, just wanted to tell you that I have to cancel tomorrow night. Mum and Dad want to go up to Canberra for the weekend to visit Grandma, and they're dragging me with them too. I'm sorry, sweetie. Next week, okay?"

Suddenly, El felt like crying. Instead, she smiled. "Yeah, okay. I love you."

"You too. Message me after work?"

"Alright, talk then." And they hung up.

What was she going to do...?
