For as long as she could remember she never had friends. Or, she did but they never stayed, they never cared, and they were never real. No, I'm not talking about imaginary, I'm saying they weren't the stereotypical friends. They used her, though she couldn't be used for much for she wasn't very talented.
On the first day of 9th grade she was walking in the shadows hoping to be ignored. After a period of time she learned not to trust anyone. Ever. People just stared at her and whispered. She wasn't exactly sure why though, she wasn't much of an attraction nor was she interesting in any way, shape, or form.
Something caught her eye though when she was walking down the hall to her second period class. The bell rang a while ago. She was late, for sure. But as she saw this figure she paused, in fear rather than astonishment. Two tall boys were playing human ping pong with a trembling figure.
Prudence sighed, sorting through her ideas of the best way to avoid this event. Something stopped her though. It was as if her feet were glued to the ground. What willed her to stop moving though? As the two tall boys finally shoved the trembling figure to the ground, she knew why.
The two tall boys ran away laughing crazily. Prudence took a deep breath and shuffled quietly to the trembling figure. He was still trying to regain his dignity and gather his stuff that was strung wildly across the hallway. Prudence knelt down and grabbed the boys pencil case.
"Why are you helping me?" The boy asked quietly, his voice breaking from fear here and there. Prudence shrugged.
" Because I know how you feel." She spoke quietly, almost in a whisper.
"Oh. Well in that case; hi I'm Felix, and you?" He introduced himself as he shoved his binder back in his backpack. Prudence hesitated. Giving out names means gathering friends, but she wanted nothing to do with friends.
"Prudence," she finally told him, deciding he was too lonely and fragile to be shot down of a person who could protect him. Though Prudence couldn't protect him when she could barely even protect herself.
