Notes: This is my first fanfiction in english, so please don't mind my grammar. I hadn't decided on the pairing yet, so you can recommend one in the comment section.  (I'm more towards ShigaDeku or maybe TodoDeku but I'm all ears for your suggestions.)

Warnings for the chapter: character's death and a little bit of angst

It had happened on a cold, stormy day of October, a few days before Halloween's arrival.

Even though it wasn't a traditional Japanese holiday, many people were celebrating it, mostly those of the modern families.

Just like the Midoriya's.

"Mom! Do I look scary?" -it was the voice of a small green haired boy.

He was dressed in a thorn, big white robe with many patches on it, an oversized hood, that had eyes and a big, grinning mouth painted on it's surface.
He was also wearing warm leather boots, and a big green bow around his neck. And of course, a few carefully painted pictures of his favourite hero: All Might. Because how could he not add a few little drawings of his own to the design?

It actually looked quite good, even though it wasn't scary at all. Maybe a little creepy because of the too wide grin on the hood, but it was alright.

Everything was alright, nothing really mattered to him.

"Of course Sweety" -smiled the pretty, green haired women at him. She was a gentle, caring mother, who would do anything for her son. Izuku had always felt safe and warm around her, not like with his father, who never really was around.

Midoriya Hisashi was a born businessmen. He was often outside of the country, and though at first he would always come home after a month or two, his visits started to shorten as years went by without any signs of Izuku's quirk. It was like he lost interest in his own son, because he wasn't worthy in his opinion.

But it was alright. As long as Izuku had his sweet, wonderful mother, nothing would matter at all.

"Do you think Kacchan will like it?" -smiled the boy back to his mother, thinking about his friend. He will probably dress up as something cool, maybe a hero or some character of their favourite comic.
It wouldn't really matter, because Kacchan was really cool, no matter what he dressed in or what he did.
He already had his quirk, a pretty strong one too. He also was the smartest kid in their class, so Izuku really looked up to him. Even when he was being mean to him, he just couldn't not like him.

Even when he hit him, when he called him names, or when he used his quirk in him. Don't get him wrong, he didn't like being hurt, Kacchan's treatment towards him left him with a terrible feeling in his guts, but he was his only friend. Besides his mother, of course, but that didn't really count, so he had to cherish the relationship they had, even though it was broken and unhealthy.
He knew Kacchan was a good person, deep inside his heart, below his arrogancy and ego. He was just a kid, he can learn.
He just had to learn.

So it was alright, too.

Maybe when he got his own quirk, they could get along like they used to before, when they were still really small.

He really wished it would happen soon.

Halloween's night arrived. He was trick or treating with his mother -he really wanted to go with Kacchan instead, but the blond wanted to go with his other friends, and they always made fun of Izuku, so he decided it was better this way.

It wasn't a very eventful night. He visited a few nice looking people with his mother, which was fine. He has got candy and chocolate bars from them, and after his mother finished chatting, they decided to head home.

They had dinner, prayed, then went to bed. Izuku didn't change into his pajamas. He preffered his tracksuit, that he's got from his mother for his birthday. It was a very rare item, that was inspired after Eraserhead, who was a lesser known underground hero.
Izuku really liked him, because even though he didn't have a very physical or a very flashy quirk, he still managed to became a pro hero, and a pretty good one too. He basicly made every fight a quirkless one, so his combat skills had to be very impressive.

A few days later, the Midoriya household burned down. It was in ruins. The whole street was covered in black, suffocating smoke, people were shouting and crying as the firemen tried to fight off the flames.

Izuku wasn't there when it happened. He was in the way to get home at that time.
He was writing into his notebook, trying to write down every little detail he's got to catch while watching the villain fight sooner that day. It was a huge fight, but it didn't take too much time for the heroes to get everything under their control.

Endeavor wasn't the number 2 hero without a reason after all.

But it didn't make him a less scary person.
To be honest, Izuku didn't really like him. He wasn't like All Might, he never cared about the damage he caused in the city, never cared enough about the citizens, that they could get hurt too.

And he was ruthless with both villains and vigillantes.

Villains supposed to be the bad guys, so he could understand why heroes didn't care if they died in the process of capturing them.

But vigillantes where a whole different level.

Even though they broke the law, they didn't hurt innocent people and they certainly did try to help people in their own way. And that's something he could understand very well.

Because if he couldn't find a way to be a pro hero, he would also try and become a vigillante. Because helping and saving people is what he wishes to do.

Sometimes he wondered if villains were the same. He didn't think anybody is born evil or bad, so there must be a reason that they turned their back to society and decided to act as they wished, ignoring anything or anybody else in the process.

He was so lost in his thoughts, that at first he didn't even notice the smokes coming from the street where he lived, but when he did, his eyes widened and he started to run.

Because his mum was at home.

It didn't take long for him to arrive to the scene. He run to the front of the house, where the heroes tried to keep the civilians from getting too close to the fire. The fireman was fighting with the flames, with not much luck.

He was searching desperately in the small crowd besides the heroes, trying to find the similar green head, but he couldn't find her anywhere. He ran to the heroes, pleading for help.

"My mum! She was inside! You have to save her, you have to-"

"I'm sorry kid, but we cannot go inside. There isn't anyone with a suitable quirk-"

"I don't care for that! My mother is there and she might be hurt! Please-" -sobbed the green haired boy, with tears running down his cheeks. Why wasn't the heroes helping? Aren't they supposed to keep them safe?

Aren't they supposed to save those in need?

So why was noone helping his mother?

His sweet, sweet mother, who is inside the burning building, while her supposed saviours are just standing outside, waiting for somebody with the right quirk to arrive.

Izuku just couldn't. He couldn't just stand there doing nothing, even if he didn't stand a change to save her.

He had to save her.

So he ran. He ran through the heroes, not caring for their reasoning, ignoring their shouts for him to stop and go back. He ran into the burning house, his home, with little care for the fire that burned his skin and made him filled with so much pain it could make one go crazy.

He ran into the room, finding his unconscious mother trapped under a crashed ceiling. He cried out loud, knelt down besides her unmoving body, not noticing the sound of the crashing stairs.

He didn't even make a sound when it had hit him.

And hours later, when the fire finally burned down, when the heroes and the firemen could finally come inside, they couldn't find anything.

There wasn't even a body left.
