The year was 1941 when I met her. My husband was away in the war, stationed in Germany. It's been two years since he was drafted. I sometimes worry about his safety, but I feel at peace knowing he promised me something. He promised he would be safe.
I was in town, September 7th, 1940. I was going to the library that day. Humming my favorite tune at the time, I was picking out a book I've been looking for.
"I don't want to set the world on fiiire~" I sang quietly when a low voice piped in. Not low like a man's voice, yet very low for a woman. "In my heart I have but one desire~" The woman, with piercing blue eyes, and a beautiful low voice, sang along.
"I've never met another woman with an interest in The Ink Spots," I chirped.
"Really? I never knew it was a man thing," the woman chuckled, her platinum hair shining in the evening light.
"According to my husband's buddies, it is," I replied.
"What sexism," she scoffed jokingly.
"How terrible," I chuckled along.
I was blindedly exiting the building with her. It felt like we already knew eachother. I normally don't connect with strangers easily.
But she was different.
