Goddamn! What in Hylia's name was that?! A thunderous roar echoed overhead, and a dramatic earthquake shook the ground beneath me so dreadfully, my legs shuddered, and caused me to crumple forward onto the pedestal in front of me. Was... Was it finally happening? The alleged Calamity... An audible gasp escaped my mouth as I saw a horrible red cloud swirling like cancerous poison around the base of Hyrule castle, fogging and surging. The head of a boar-like beast emerged from the crimson tide, bellowing out a battle cry that rivaled the clamor of a tidal wave, bashing and slamming against the coast. Red lightning lanced through the sky as the bubbling clouds spread and replaced the white puffs, engulfing the firmament in a scarlet storm. Panic raged up and swam like bile in my throat, which lead me to shakily reach for the small ornamental beetle I had bought from Kakariko village. Its pinchers were firmly clasped on the leather of my headband. Oh, Gods, spirits, please let the champions make it to their divine beasts. I squeezed my eyes shut as I heard a second shriek, the one that matched Vah Medoh! Revali... Father... Good luck. I wish I could be out there, helping the champions, Link, the soldiers. They could use my combat capabilities, but... I cannot bear to be amongst those damn guardians..! Stomping around, firing away with those lasers. I am unable to stand near them, let alone fight alongside them! Finally, I inhaled deeply and gazed back out onto Hyrule field. From my perch on top of mount Hylia, I could see everything, including the two small blue and white dots making their way straight for the castle, whilst all others fled in the opposite direction. Please, be careful, Zelda, Link. I was more worried about Link; that kid always seemed to enjoy pitting himself against men and beasts of all size, without a single thought about his own well being. Something else caught my eye. Repulsive, blackened fireballs spread out from the mass swarming around the castle, shooting out in all directions. I couldn't see where they were going, but I assumed it was just some pyrotechnics to help announce the return of the Calamity. One such flare darted in my direction, arcing its way towards the shrine, the Keh Namut shrine, that was at my back. I spun around, expecting... something, but nothing prepared me for what I saw. The shrine lit up with a bloody orange, unnatural light, along with a puff of what I could only describe as steam, the same hue as the monster's bloody-red veils. I've been working so long to uncover the secrets of these mysterious shrines, the trials of the hero, this could be my chance! My fingers thumbed the golden beetle on my circlet, before finding the small gear that released its vice grip. It dropped with its satisfying weight into my palm, and I stared at the ornamental piece for just a moment. It's jade wings and amber-colored eyes never failed to stupify me. With the belly pointed down, I pressed the small device onto the stand, half-heartedly hoping something would happen. I've tried before, multiple times; On the decrepit towers scattered across the land, the Daqo Chisay shrine outside of Gerudo town, anything I could think of, but it would never function in the way I was hoping. The Sheikah Slate operated these shrines, wielded by the hero. Though, I'm no hero, and this isn't a slate. I sighed, ready to turn away and watch the events of the battle of the ages in it's full. Yet... As soon as I began to swivel my head back to where I last saw Vah Medoh in the sky, a small sound, like the chime of a bell, rang out, and the shrine began to swirl in a gorgeous blue, as the door- or, what I always assumed to be the door - zippered open to reveal a small alcove. This is the miracle I had always been hoping for! I stumbled forward, and, upon planting my feet on the crest of the Sheikah, it began to descend into the ground. One final shriek of a divine beast could be heard before the thick walls of the shrine muted all other sounds. The pedestal soon hit the bottom, where I was met with a thin blue veil. It was transparent, and apparently permeable, as I was easily able to pass through. The effects of the Calamity were apparent inside here, as well. At this thought, a red beam had locked onto me, directly shining straight in my eyes. There were guardians inside the shrines, too?! This was a small one, but I shook in my boots nonetheless. This thing, this contraption will not make me its prey. A single beam shot out, with a sound like breaking ice as it collided harmlessly with the wall behind me. My wings easily slipped out of the sewn-in slits in my tunic as I easily maneuvered my way over a small gate to my left, where the miniature guardian sat waiting with it's emotionless, unblinking blue eye. Using the momentum of my short flight, I tugged the sickle out of its sheath on my right hip and swung the weapon towards the machine, but it was for naught. There was an unseen pool of water in my landing zone. With a graceful slip and a colorful string of curses, my back planted firmly into the freezing waters below. The metallic clangs and splashing nearby urged me to struggle to my feet. Yet, it was much, much too late for that. The red ray of light had honed in on its target; me. With an unceremonious gust of air, it shot its beacon at the floor directly below me. No explosion, no fiery death. Instead, I was frozen in a pillar of ice! My eyelids were iced shut, and my lungs could no longer function. So the cold is what kills me in the end, huh? Goodbye to Cerul Vure, the halfbreed outcast. I mused in my own head, before my thoughts seized, and I succumbed to the frost in my bones. ~~~~~~
