"Avery, what are you doing at home?" Aidan asked, his eyes wide and his mouth slightly agape whilst he rubbed the back of his neck.
"I thought I would surprise you by bringing some cake home for lunch but it seems I'm the one that got the surprise," Avery laughed and gestured for us to come over to her.
"What's this?" I asked, stunned. I looked down at the breakfast bench, there was a small bowl of soup, a sandwich and a slice of cake for each of us laid out.
"I made lunch, except the cake, I bought that," Avery smiled and I sat down on the stool opposite her whilst Aidan sat beside her.
"Are you sure about that?" Aidan smirked, he picked up the sandwich and took a big bite.
"Fine, okay. I bought the sandwiches and the soup from Aidan's favourite deli," Avery eye-rolled, she knew full well she couldn't get anything passed Aidan.
"That time of the month, huh Avs?"
"How do you know, Aidan?" I questioned before I took a mouthful of tomato soup which was so full of flavour it awakened my senses.
"This is our monthly tradition, Avery has cravings on the first day of her period, so we have this lunch together."
"The soup is really good," I interjected.
"Wait until you taste the sandwich!" Avery beamed, she licked her fingers from stray mayo which I laughed at, "he's my favourite brother but don't tell the others."
"Glad you know it," Aidan smiled.
"Isn't it weird for you guys to be this close?" I eyed up my food and waited for a response. However, I was met with silence, I held my breath and looked up to see them both wide-eyed and staring back at me.
"What?" I shrugged.
"No, it's not," Aidan reassured before he continued to eat.
"Aidan is my best friend, we might be from two different eggs but we started out life at the same time, inside the same womb," I saw Aidan gaze lovingly at his sister's words, "I do feel like he is the other part of me, he is one of my soul mates and there's no one else on this planet that could take that place."
"I agree, it's only natural for us to be this close because it's all we've known," Aidan commented, his gaze now turned from Avery to me.
"So you come as a package deal then?" I chuckled.
"Yes," Aidan returned the laughter.
"We're probably the closest siblings in our family, but I think we're all pretty close," Avery looked thoughtful, "I guess it's also pretty hard to get lonely in our family too," I watched as Avery shook her head, a smile on her face as she took another bite of her food.
"It must be nice having a family though," I swirled my spoon around in my nearly empty soup. Thinking how ironic it was because empty is what I had felt for most of my life.
"I wish everyone could experience that," Avery sympathised.
"You can't miss what you never had," I smiled but deep down it cut like a knife. My stomach filled with anxiety and my head was still raw from trauma. I sighed and tried to push those thoughts from my mind, thinking about how I was about to see Danny again real soon.
"So, did mum talk to you about birth control?" Avery quizzed which made Aidan splutter out his soup and we both laughed in response.
"Yes, she did. She said there's a small window after you have a miscarriage that you're extra fertile or something," I reeled off, remembering something about it but I wasn't paying too much attention because I wasn't expecting to get laid anytime soon.
