"SABLE!" I hear my older brother's, Kaine, voice call for me. I pet my horse, Cocoa and shout back, "COMIN'!""Cash!" I call as I'm walking out of the barn. My black and tan German Shepherd comes running up along my side. I had named him after one of my favorite music artist, Johnny Cash. "Hey, boy." I say as I pet his head, he licks my hand in return. His dark eyes were fierce yet welcoming.
I finally reach my three story white farm house, opening the doors and letting myself and Cash in.
My father sat at the table with a mug of straight black coffee, his worried green eyes looking into mine. "Dad, what's wrong?" I questioned, his appearance worried me. He was pale and I knew something was bothering him.
He just shook his head and tore his eyes from mine and looked into his coffee.
I thought maybe he's just remembered something of my mother, who died when I was only 7. She was hit by a drunk driver on the way to buy groceries. It was years ago, 12 actually. I looked a lot like her, I had her blue green eyes, her shortness, and most of her facial structure. The only difference was that I had my dad's dark brown hair. Kaine on the other hand was a smitten image of our father.
Kaine slides into the kitchen from the living room, he had a similar face of worry, maybe even fright, plastered on his face. "Sable, I need to talk to you." He says, grabbing firmly onto my arm and pulling me into the living room.
"Um, ow! Stop!" I complain and slap his grip of my arm away.
"Sable. Elizabeth. McClain. Sit." He orders. I've never seen nor heard my brother this firm before, I decide to take his advice and sit on the old black leather couch and Kaine sits next to me.
"Aliens have invaded earth." He blurted out. I raise an eyebrow at him and smirk. "Yeah, and they're green and come in peace." I say, playing along with him. Kaine had always been sarcastic, trying to prank people nonstop.
I go to get up, but Kaine yanks me straight back down, not letting go of my wrist.
"Sable! I'm not kidding! I know it seems like me, but I'm not! I swear!" He yells. His face was still the same it had been the moment before, and he wasn't laughing.
Although in the back of my mind I was growing terrified I laughed, "Sure, Parker Kaine McClain."
"ALIENS HAVE INVADED EVERY CAPITAL OF EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!" He snaps, and turns on the tv.
The normal anchor lady for the local news had a face of terror just like Kaine's. Just like my father's.
"It's confirmed, planet earth it under attack. We just got news from Washington, D.C. that our president is now taken prisoner by these extraterrestrial life forms." I listen until I let out a blood curdling scream, realizing what was happening.
Kaine wraps me in his arms, resting his head on top of mine, "Shhh. Sable, I know." He says, rocking me back and forth. This was like deja vu. When we heard the news of mother's death.
I remember it just like yesterday, me and Kaine had just got back from school, we were sitting at the table doing our homework when my dad got a call. After a couple of minutes he slammed the phone down and stormed outside.
Kaine looked at me then back at the phone, my father hadn't hung it up cause we heard muffled voices coming from it.
Kaine approached the phone, "Hello? What's happened?" He asked then his face grew pale and he looked sick.
He hung up the phone and fell on his knees crying, I ran over to him. "What's wrong?" I ask. He looked up at me with sarrow eyes.
"Mom's dead. She was in a car wreck caused by a drunk driver." He chokes. I started screaming and crying, falling into his arms.
There we were, only seven and nine. Now nineteen and twenty one. Time without our mother passed faster than we thought.
I snapped back to the surreal reality when I was nudged by a cold wet nose. Cash looked up at me with concerned eyes. I had always loved him for that, he was always there to make sure I was okay.
"We need to get Kody. She lives in a more populated area." I say, and Kaine nods in agreement, "And Timber."
Dakota Jameson, or Kody, was my best friend, we actually looked a lot alike. She had the exact shade of brown that my hair is, except hers is curly, and her eyes looked similar to mine. When she straightens her hair a lot of people tend to confuse us. Her personality was almost completely different than mine, her sarcasm level was even higher than Kaine's. She has her anger problems and I tend to try and conceal my anger, I was much more peaceful, as long as you don't push me that is. That's why we became best friends. We were different, yet brought out the best in each other.
Timber Nelson was Kaine's best friend. He was his own person, all and all, just like my brother.
Father agreed that we should get them here and after a while, they and their families were at our house.
"Thank you so much, again." Mrs. Jameson tells my father.
He nodded, "I know how y'all are like a family to my kids, and in this crisis, you need family." He said in that rusty voice of his.
Along with them they had brought supplies, blankets, clothes, weapons, food, and other things.
Kaine, Timber, Kody, and I all went up to my room.
"What's happening?" Dakota asks us as we all sat in a circle on the floor.
"I don't know, we just all need to stick together through this." Kaine replied.
We all had blank faces. Everything was so surreal. You would've never thought that aliens could actually invade Earth. This was a topic that would be in a Science fiction novel or movie, not real life. It just made you question life and existence itself.
