| chapter 31 |
"Uh, sorry to break this up, but who is this?" A girl with blue hair comes forward.
Liam steps up from behind me to place a gentle hand on my shoulder. I looked up at him as he said to them, "Amara Westwood, she's a Red and a really good friend of mine. We met back at East River."
Friend... I'm his friend.
How ridiculous am I to think for a split second we could be more?
"Red?!" The blue hair girl holds up a knife to my face.
I put my hands up, shielding my face. "Woah, woah, woah!"
"Vida, slow down!" The other boy said, trying to pull the knife away.
"Yeah uh... Vida? Is that it?" I asked, nervously. "I - I don't think a knife to my throat is a good idea."
"Oh yeah? How come?" She snaps.
Without thoroughly thinking, I snap my fingers and the small spark ignited from my fingertips moved to the palm of my hand. I could easily see the fear she was feeling behind the warrior face. "Does this count as an answer?"
She hesitates but puts the knife down. I let out the oxygen I didn't know I was holding in tightly. Liam's gentle, charming eyes give me the comfort I need.
Another rustle, and then through the trees and into the light I see her. "Ruby?"
Ruby saw me, ignores me, and runs up to Liam. "Where have you been?"
Wow, so much for starting over.
Liam can't help but stutter. "I - uh... Amara?"
Ruby shuts her eyes and presses her lips into a fine line. "Amara Westwood? I thought she was dead."
Before I could say anything, Liam speaks for me. "No, Ruby, she's behind you."
Wait a minute. Liam told me he didn't remember her! And then kissed me!
This is so very confusing.
"Hey, so not that I care, but we have to keep moving. Let's keep going." Vida calls out and already is walking away rom us.
I refused to say anything to Ruby, the words she spat at me six months ago haunt me. "How did it not know this was going to happen?"
She called me it.
I block out the words and focus on the situation at hand. This was my world now... and I have to learn and to grow into someone I am not.
I have to control the fire burning inside of me.
