I drive myself home, while the events of that fateful day clouds my head. I arrive at an empty house and remember that my mom's class at the seminary is not until 5:30 this afternoon. Meaning I have the whole house to myself for a good 3 hours.
Not having too much homework or chores I decide to workout. I grab my black cotton leggings, my Zumba rubber shoes and my favorite Zumba shirt.
I drive to the town civic center and see that some of my Zumba classmates are here already. My Zumba classmates are composed of elderly women, teachers, the mayor's wife and some college students. I sign my name in the logbook and I was greeted by my Zumba instructor "Welcome back, El"
I answer back closing the log book shut. I walk to my usual spot and minutes later we begin. I really missed doing Zumba. Working full time took it away from me. By the time were done it's already 4:30pm and it's pouring outside. "El, wanna join us for some coffee?" My friend Michelle who is a college student asks me. I open my mouth to answer but was interrupted. "Come on El, we didn't see you whole summer, we missed ya girl"
I smile and agreed. We walk to cafe 1919 just outside the civic center. We ordered our coffee and talk and laugh I lost track of time when my phone rings, I excuse myself and picked up it's my mom. "Hello, mom?" "Ellie it's raining too hard and the seminary car broke down. Can you come pick me up?"
I am speechless for a moment and answer."Of course mom" I can't just leave my mother out there in the cold. Okay, I'm exaggerating a bit. I bid Michelle and her friends good bye and I run to my car then drive to the seminary.
My heart is pounding louder than the raindrops on the roof of my car. I enter the seminary gates and parked my car close to the roofed walkway. I step out of my car to see the dimmed and deserted lobby. I call my mom but she's not picking up.
I'm starting to get worried since they say that seminaries are haunted and it's dark and raining. Perfect timing what do ya know.
Then someone cleared their throat and I turn around almost instantly. As my eyes spots the person in front of me my jaw fall to the floor. It's Joseph Barnes.
"Excuse me miss, are you lost?" It's definitely Joseph Barnes and he's talking to me.
Shaking my head I answer " Uhm, no. I'm looking for my mom. Mrs. Adams?"
"Oh yeah, I just got out of her class, I think they're in the conference room. Fr. rector called and emergency meeting. Come I'll show you" He gestures me to follow him.
I just nod at him and follow suit. Getting up a few steps, were now in the second floor and he stops outside a room with the huge tinted sliding windows.
"Would you like to get in?" I shoot my head up realizing he's speaking to me again. Oh this is so embarrassing. I'm acting like a total wimp. Where is the fierce Ellie today?
"Well I guess not if they're having a meeting. I'll be fine out here. Thanks so much"And as if on cue there was a flash of lightning and a very loud thunderclap and of course I'm startled.
"Do you need company?"
I look up and see that Joseph is still here. Now's the chance Ellie. A chance you've been waiting for for a year now. It's now or never and he's giving you the freedom of a choice.
Drawing a deep breath. Universe be damned.
"Yeah. that'd be great" I responded.
