Tigers With Determination

Chapter 4

As I look around, Valkarine's cell consists of a toilet in the left corner, a sink beside it and a metal bed on the right corner. She is on this bed to be what seems to be tied up in chains. I punch in the code to unlock the shield door and immediately run to her. She is laying flat on her stomach without a shirt, leading the eyes to be directly drawn to her back. Her condition is much worse then the photos. This leads me to have to move fast in order to prevent infection. I open my duffle bag and lay out a tarp on the floor next to me. I then grab out a needle and some numbing liquid and proceed to make the needle. I then move her dark curly brown hair over her shoulders and insert the needle right into the top of her back. I then chuck the needle in a plastic bag and pull out a cloth and bowl. I run to the sink, fill the bowl up with warm water and place the bowl on the tarp. I then wet the cloth in the bowl and begin cleaning the blood and puss from her back. She begins to stir but I continue. After about 5 minutes of this, I find another cloth in my bag and place antiseptic liquid onto it. This bit could almost kill her from in pain if I didn't insert the needle. I bite my lower lip and proceed. For the next few moments, there is nothing but the sound of breathing and my heartbeat. The whip marks are so deep. I notice that some of them will have to be stitched up for her to heal properlu. I have never seen anything like this in my years working here. I'm honestly surprised that she isn't dead yet. I rummage through my bag to find some string and needle and begin to make a start. This bit may take an hour or so.

After an hour later and 67 stiches, I'm nearly finished. I'm starting to think I am a miracle worker. I begin cleaning her back again. First with water, then with the antiseptic liquid. Just when I'm about to finish up, I hear Valkarine mumble again. I decide to put the cloth into the bowl of water and walk over to her head. I squat down so we are only a few inches away from each other. She is beautiful. She has long delicate eyelashes and thick graceful eyebrows. She has a small freckly nose and pink puffy lips. There is a strand of hair covering her face, so I carefully stroke it behind her ear. Her eyes then shoot open and she screams.

I jump into the air out of pure shock and knock over the bowl of water. She begins to struggle at her chains on her wrists and ankles before finally she gives in. We lock eyes with each other and neither of us move. I decide to say the first words.

"Valkarine, my name is Kaspian and i am here to help you. Not hurt you."

Silence...

"I know your scared, and after spending the last few hours stitching you up, I think its safe to say I'm a good guy..."

"I can't feel my back," she calmly states.

"Oh. In order to stop the spread of infection I had to rub some antiseptic on. But, to do so without killing you, I had to numb your back with a needle. I also had to give you stitches..."

"why didn't you just kill me then?"

I felt a painful stab at my heart. They have really made this girl broken. She doesn't even think there is a chance of her escaping from this place. She has given up and just wants the simplest, worthless thing.

Death

I continue to look into this girls' fierce green eyes. She holds herself well and hides behind a face. But I can tell she just wants to leave this world behind.

"I just want to be numb, I don't want to feel anything anymore. Why can't you make me numb?" Valkarine muttered.

She is like a helpless puppy trying to find its mother. The puppy thinks its fierce to others, when really, it's just small and helpless. She is so beautiful and undeserving of this. The Network needs to hurry up and figure out a plan, because I don't think I can do this nurse thing much longer after seeing Valkarine.

I then hear my phone DING, so I take my gloves off and unlock my phone

It reads:

HI

MILO HERE
GOOD NEWS!!!!

THE PLAN IS GOING AHEAD. AND BY AHEAD, I MEAN ANYTIME NOW!!

I have been informed to tell you that when the alarm goes off, you are expected to run with Valkarine out of her cell, into the elevator and straight out of section B. There will be a helicopter outside waiting for you and Valkarine. You are expected to be on that helicopter at no later than 6.40AM. IF you are not there by then (which I doubt) it is expected that you were taken hostage and need to be rescued. Which will probably take a few months... SO DON'T BE LATE!!

I look at the time on my phone and it reads

6.15AM

He expects me to escape here with a very injured prisoner in less than 30 minutes. He must be joking. I look up from my phone and lock eyes with Valkarine. She was staring at me the whole time.

"so uhm..." I say as I scratch my head. "I might be able to help you out of this cell. But only if you cooperate."

She continues staring before she asks, "and why should I believe you?"

"Very good question. And you have every right to ask this after everything you seemed to have been through this morning. Now see, I can't really answer that in this facility. But what I can say is in the next few moments an alarm should go off sounding my cue to get the hell out of here with you by my side. If you do not cooperate, I can administer you with what some would call a 'knockout needle', sending you into a slumber for the next few hours.

"And all I have to do is cooperate? Then I'm out of here?" she asks.

"You will be removed from the governments hands and taken in by some rebellious fighters who thoroughly believe the governmental system is corrupt."

She closes her eyes for a moment. I decide to walk over to the wall pad and scan my phone over it. I hear a click as the chains unlock. I walk back over to Vakarine and remove the chains from her. She sits up slowly while covering her chest.

"I'm coming with you," she smiles.

I suddenly hear the alarms go off. The room goes red and now is my time to shine. I rummage for some cloth to wrap Valkarine's chest and back in. She slowly stands up and places her arms in the air as I do my magic. I then pick her up into my arms and punch the code into the door to unlock the shield. We then make a run for it.
