The Beginning

He was all alone in the beginning. The shadows were his only friend. Well, that and his beloved doll of course. It was a dirty black rabbit doll wearing old fashioned western clothes, and it was the only thing they allowed him to have. This was odd for 2 reasons:

1 they were in Japan.
And 2, why would they give this to him when they're going to kill him?

At least he thought they gave it to him. He woke up one day and it was there so someone must've left it for him. He took it everywhere, even to his "lessons." The Rabbit saw everything that they did. They made him dance with fans in a mask in preperation for the sacrifice. They beat him and starved him if he messed up, but not enough to leave scars. They feared their god would not accept a faulty sacrifice so they always tended to his wounds. They painted him with symbols all over his left arm leaving only the wrist bare. Then the screams began. They began tattooing the symbols on by hand, line by line, carefully as if stiching together a stuffed doll. When it was done he'd been placed back in his lavish prison where he cried himself to sleep. As he fell asleep though beady red eyes watched from the shadows. His last thought was how he didn't remember bringing his bunny back or that anyone brought it back for him.

He talked to the rabbit doll sometimes. Told it things. "My mother bore me for this cult originally. I heard the elders speak of her once. Apparently she was supposed to give me up but she tried to run away with me. They killed her and took me here... I wonder what she was like? They say I was born to be a sacrifice to their god. They train me for that day, but they refuse to tell me anything about it. I dare not run though, they said I didn't need eyes to be a sacrifice as I'll be wearing a mask. And I don't need eyes to learn so they'd take them away. I don't mind cause I like the dark, but if they took them then I'd never see you again. You're my only friend in this hell." When he talks it almost looks to him like the rabbit doll LISTENS. 'But that's impossible. It's only a doll!' The boy thinks.

The next time they tattoo him is after his dancing lessons when he's exhausted. He should've seen it coming as they worked him extra hard that day, till he physically couldn't stand anymore. They didn't even have to hold him down as they tattooed his legs. Both his legs down to just before the ankles. It goes by quicker and easier as they have two people on each leg at the same time, and he's so exhausted that he can't even move. When they get a little too close to his privates he feels anger from the shadows. In confusion he looks and sees once again, the rabbit doll sending severe malice towards the people. He wonders if he's lost his mind and is just projecting his anger on the doll. But as he gets lost in his thoughts he realises he's being picked up and carried to his room like a bride... the shadows ripple in rage even more as he's carried out.

~~~~~~~~~~
He's been given rest from dance practice till his leg heals, but they've given him homework to do. He sits in bed practicing his painting and calligraphy as the doll watches from atop his shoulders. "I wonder what kind of God I will br sacrificed to." The boy starts. "They don't ever speak of him. I really only know that he's a he. I assume he likes the arts since that's pretty much all they teach me but if he's just gonna eat me then what's the point? Is it like seasoning me? Is he handsome? Does he eat human food? Is he even going to eat me? All I know is that I'm going to die here on my 14th birthday anyways. They say it can't be a day later.... only 9 months left to live...." putting the brush down the boy is shocked to see that he painted a picture of the same rabbit doll he was speaking to except larger. The Rabbit wore the same clothes but had large claws and a scythe wrapped in chains. His large frame casting even larger shadows. An inscription was next to the picture. The inscription read:
'B-Rabbit, The Guardian of Shadows.' Needless to say that the boys Guardian was less then pleased with the picture.
