THE YOUNG GILMORE stood in luke's apartment, awkwardly playing with the sleeves of her chilton blazer as she waited for jess to get home from school. she knew lillie would kill her if she knew what she was doing. she hated lying to lillie, lying wasn't in rory's nature.

the teen boy came through the door, jumping in surprise when he saw rory sat on his couch. "jeez! how'd you get in?"

"luke let me up." she answered, pursing her lips as she stood up from the couch. he shrugged off his jacket, throwing it onto the table, giving her a confused look as she wasn't saying anything.

"you need something, gilmore?"

"oh uh, yeah. i just needed to tell you something. about lillie."

concern flooded his expression. "is she okay?" he asked immediately making rory's lips turn up. it was sweet to see someone care like that about her best friend. it's what lillie deserved.

"yeah, of course. she's fine. she's good." she said awkwardly, jess visibly relaxing. "it's her birthday on saturday."

"what?" he asked, narrowing his eyes. "she didn't tell me."

"don't get mad at her for it, please." rory said quickly seeing the hurt expression on jess' face. "she hates her birthday. i don't exactly know why but it's something to do with her parents but she told me she hadn't told you, i just thought you'd want to know." she rambled as he nodded in understanding not saying anything in return.

"thanks rory." he gave a half smile trying to play off the hurt he felt. "so when's the party then?"

"what? there's no party. definitely no party. lillie hates parties."

"saturday, at eight?"

"seven." rory corrected with a wide grin as jess smirked. "right, i should be going then." she smiled grabbing her stuff, pausing before leaving. "oh and jess, if you don't get her a present, i will personally beat your ass."

the boy let out a small laugh and nodded. "got it." the two nodded at each other awkwardly before rory left. jess let out a sigh, feeling upset that lillie didn't tell him about her birthday. he would've understood that she might not want to celebrate it because of her parents, he would've done something with just the two of them, bought her a present at the very least. he would've understood, it's not like he is elated when his birthday comes around either but he figured he was comfortable enough to share it with the blonde.

he didn't want to be mad at her, he really didn't, especially on her birthday. but he couldn't ignore the hurt he felt that the girl didn't tell him. he sighed, grabbing his jacket and heading back out of the apartment to look for a present.

lillie woke up on saturday morning, to see her room filled with various coloured balloons and confetti. she rolled her eyes, hiding a smile as she led back down, picking up her phone and dialling the culprit.
