I stood up and looked across the horizon. It was dark as the sun had already set hours ago. It was winter but the cold wind felt numb against me. Trudging across the open plane, littered with dead bodies, I was hit by a strong, familiar, stench of burning wood and something else.

Something more vile.

As I got closer to the source, there was a large blazing fire, burning the Vongola mansion.

The place we called home.

The place of warm memories.

Burning. Down.

I stared listlessly at my hands. I was still wearing my activated Vongola gear, the sleek red gloves of the cambio forma of the Vongola ring version X. The ring that I pledged to Primo in the name of restoring the true meaning of the Vongola famiglia.

The gloves were drenched in a different type of red.

A thick, metallic, liquid red that had lost all its previous warmth.

The red of enemy famiglia. The red of my once upon a time allies.

I had sworn never to kill...

Red.

I felt my world crashing down into a broken heap. The heavy weight of despair finally crushed my resolution. The war was over, but at what cost...?

The Arcobaleno were the first to fall, followed by the Millefiore, Cavallone, Varia and then the Shimon. The Vongola was betrayed by one of our allies, destroying our famiglia inside out.

The wretched Gabbiano famiglia.

The famiglia that had been created for the sole purpose of bringing despair and destruction to Vongola. I should have known. I should've known.

How many times has my intuition ever been wrong?

Never, yet I still decided that the blasted Gabbiano were trustworthy.

This is all my fault.

I couldn't protect my famiglia, no... my family

I broke my promise.

I'm a failure.

I've lost everything.

"Hahaha..." I couldn't stop the anguished chuckles from leaving my cracked lips. As I undid my HDWM, I felt my adrenaline slowly disperse out of my body. My knees buckled, no longer being able to support my weight. Falling onto my back, I glanced towards my burning home, then to the sky. The sky was clear, but there were no tiny lights illuminating the darkness. The sudden blistering pain cut me from my somber musing. Blearily looking down, I saw blood dribbling out of a bullet hole on the side of my abdomen. The pain spiked as my adrenaline fully died off. Accepting my fate, I closed my eyes.

"God, or whoever's up there... please give me another chance. A chance to redo everything, a chance to redeem myself. Please... I just want to see my family again." I didn't care how hoarse my voice sounded from the lack of use. I didn't care how much tears were leaking out of my eyes. I didn't care how painful it felt as the flame burning inside me was dying out.
