Silvia has been back at college for nearly a month and yet she never left her room except for classes and the occasional meal in the mess hall. Tonight was no different. She was curled up in her oversized Middleton High sweatshirt and pajama pants watching her favorite Telenovela Crimenes Pasionales, Crimes of passion.
Rogelio was just about to confess his love to Sofia when her roommate burst through the room. Silvia jumped out of her skin. Her roommate Alexis stumbled in dragging a boy behind her. Her lipstick was smeared and it was no mystery where the residue was. Alexis pulled her frat boy back in for a kiss as she giggled, both of them unaware of Silvia.
She cleared her throat and the couple turned to face her. Alexis rolled her eyes and pushed the boy out of the room for a minute, telling him to wait while she took care of things. Alexis straightened our her crumbled dress and stumbled over to Silvias bed, plopping down next to her.
"Hey Via." She smiled her words slurring, she was drunk. Silvia was used to this Alexis had been her roommate freshman year but she usually slept at her "friends" place for the night. As sophomore year had started she had started bringing her friends back to their dorm room more often. "So Alec and I were hoping we could have some alone time."
"And you could have some alone time back at his fraternity." Silvia didn't even bother to pause the telenovela, or look up at Alexis.
"We could if they weren't having a party where everyone was using every single room, including his roommate who basically locked him out after we walked in on him and his girlfriend in a rather interesting position."
"Ew gross Alexis I don't need details."
"Look it's a one night thing please just go out, do something instead of sitting up in our room watching that television thing." Alexis pulled Silvia's earbuds out and snatched her phone away.
"Hey! Give me my phone back."
"Sure when you agree to leave and do something other than watching that show." Alexis stood up holding her phone up high. Alexis was only a little taller than Silvia but with her heals she easily towered over her.
Silvia jumped off the bed and tried to get her phone from her roommate. "It's a telenovela. And I do things. I go out for the occasional meal with Milo."
"You can't call having Chinese takeout with your architecture buddy going out." Alexis ran out of the room and Silvia followed her. Before she knew it she was locked out of her own dorm room holding her phone which she had snatched back.
She started banging in the door. "Let me in!"
"No!"
"But I don't even have my key or anything!"
A pillow and blanket were thrown out along with a handful of Silvia's other things. "Heres some stuff to entertain yourself! Go spend the the night at Milo's and get some, God knows he's been pining after you since freshman year." Silvia heard the door locked and knew she'd end up spending the night on a common room couch. She considered reporting Alexis to the RA, but thought against it. She gathered up the items that Alexis had thrown out to her. There was her pencil case and her sketchbook, along with rolled up designs for her architecture project she was supposed to be working on.
Freshman year was finally over meaning she could finally get past basics and start studying actual architecture. She had been so excited to take the class, taking excess notes and studying famous building. She had won countless awards for her tiny homes she designed back in high school and was ready to win more in college. But as soon as they were assigned there first project she noticed that everyone around her was just as good as she was, perhaps even better. She had found herself falling into a creative slump.
She had been working on everything but her project, neglecting her work. But now was a good as time as any to try and come up with an
idea that could outdo her classmates. She made her way down the carpeted hall that led to the common room area. There was only a handful of kids scattered in the area. There was a shorthaired girl with her arm around her girlfriend in front of the big TV watching some movie. There was a group of boys crowded around a foosball table shouting as they each fought to win. Silvia made her way over to where there was an empty table and unrolled her plans. At the table text to her there was a group of guys and girls talking.
She opened her sketchbook out and looked over the plans she had drafted out. She had just picked up her pencil when she heard something that caught her attention from the other table.
"My brother would always tell me about it when he'd come home for Christmas break. He said that there's this big all black house outside of Beverly in the big woods. And that him and his friends went out there once and they heard voices so they ventured up the steps and looked inside the dusty windows. Inside there was a family of vampires feasting on their latest victim." The boy telling the story mimicked a vampire baring his fangs to his friends. They all look unamused with the story. The girl on his left just laughed.
"Come on Jamie you don't believe that do you?" The laughing girl asked as she took a sip from her coffee mug.
"Yes I do Bridget they're real! Vampires are out there!" The whole group laughed this time. "Come on you gotta believe me." She nodded her head in a no. "Look tell you what Halloween is in a few days let's go out to the woods and find the house."
"Are you crazy no." Bridget smacked him lightly on his arm.
"Why? Are you scared you might be turned into one." He lurched at the girl and she squealed as he covered her face in kisses.
"Get off." She shoved him away and he tumbled out of his chair.
"Come on let's go, Halloween night, all of us."
"No there may not be vampires in that woods but there are bears and stuff." Another guy rebutted his idea.
"Do you even know how to get there?" Bridget asked as she helped him back up.
"Duh of course. How many Victorian gothic houses are there in the middle of the woods."
Silvia felt her ears prick up. Despite her awkwardness she turned around in her chair to face the group. "Excuse me did you just say that there's a Gothic Victorian house in the middle of the woods."
The group looked kinda of surprised that she had started talking to them out of no where. The boy Jamie spoke up getting all excited. "Yea there's vampires there! We were gonna go on Halloween night!"
"No we are not!" The group all said in unison.
"Tell me more about it." Silvia had pulled her chair over to their table next to Jamie.
He looked so excited that someone was interested in vampires. "So vampires original are said to come from Romania according to a lot of studies. And apparently the original Dracula family got chased out what the end of the 18th century and set up home here in Beverly. My brother said-"
"I don't want to interrupt." Silvia gave a gentle smile. "But I don't really care about the vampires I want to know about the house."
Jamie looked taken aback. Bridget stifled a laugh. "You-u don't care about vampires?"
Silvia shook her head in a no and scooted closer to the group. She could care less. "I wanna know about the house."
