I wake to a knock at my door.
"Kori, your friends are here" my mom groans.
She must've just woken up too. I look at my music note shaped clock, it reads 10:28. My mom walks in and opens my window. The mid-July breeze crawls in through the screen, and makes it's way up my nose. She takes a minute to breathe it in, then walks out and shuts the door behind her. She always remembers to do that, it's a very respectable quality. I throw my blanket off my legs and walk to my closet. I slide open the door and grab my plaid shirt. The yellow one, it matches my mood. I pull it over my stiff pj shirt and throw on some gym shorts. I slide the door close and look at myself in the mirror. The pink is starting to fade from my locs, I was planning to re-dye them last week. I walk away from the mirror, some what satisfied, and make my way downstairs.•••••
"Aye Kori" Cameron says
His bright green eyes tell me he's been up for hours, but still didn't bother to comb his long wavy hair. He just tucked it under a beanie. I stop at the end of the stairs and greet them all with a peace sign, Liam returns the gesture and we laugh. Liam's always been my favorite. Sure I've know him the longest but even still, he's so easy to talk to and down to earth. I join them in the kitchen and Alex walks over with coffee she made with my mom's new coffee pot. She sets the cups on the table and reaches around and hugs my neck. The boys grab the cups she sat down and drink. I grab one of the two remaining cups and take a sip. Me and Liam make eye contact over the cup and start to giggle. The coffee never taste good, but none of us have the heart to tell her. Liam clears his throat.
"So, you guys ready"
"Of course" Cameron says a little to quickly.
We all laugh and walk out the back door.•••••
The square room is in my backyard which makes my house the place to be. We made it almost three years ago to this day. Its our summer hang out space, just a little box in a tree. Even as 17 year olds, we've yet to grow out of it. Running ahead of us all, Cameron is the first one up. He zips up the curtain we use as a door. I climb up the ladder and attempt to unzip it but he holds it tight.
"Password ma'am" he says through a clown like laugh.
There's no password. There has never been a password. I try to unzip it but he just holds it tighter and lets out a really ugly laugh. I push against the curtain and feel his knees. He must be squatting. I push against his knees and we hear a thump inside, assumed to be him hitting the opposing wall. Our assumption is confirmed when we see a plank of wood fall down from the back of the tree.
"Come on guys" Liam groins while throwing up his eyes.
Alex muffles a laugh.
I climb down the ladder and follow Alex and Liam to the back of the tree. There's a plank of wood on the ground leaving a Cameron size hole in our wall. He looks down at us and waves.
"Get down here and help us fix it" I tell him. After a minute he meets us in the back of the tree with the ladder. I run inside to grab some nails and a hammer.
