Beginnings....

She was born into a family who didn't want her.   Her mother died when she was 18 months old.   All the family promised they would look out for her,  but,  the truth was, no one did,  nor did they care.

Winona always knew she was different from other normal people.  She never knew why,  just knew it.

Her  dad,  whom she thought loved her so much,  didn't really.   There were things during her young life which were odd about him which she couldn't put a finger on.

Case in point,  she absolutely loved horses and wanted one badly.   Her dad knew this but couldn't be bothered to buy a horse.   He loved airplanes,  watching them land and takeoff at Sky Harbor Airport  in Phoenix.   That he could do and made sure he did.

There isn't anything wrong with watching planes land and takeoff, but it was always very one sided.   Winona ended up playing along the deck while her dad was off in plane-land.   Never much caring where she was or what she was doing.

Middlings....

Her dad married a lady who had some sons.   She doesn't remember much except the lady beat the tar  out of her.   She saw her dad beat the lady up,  trying to strangle her but let her go.   There was a car ride when her dad cried  the whole trip.

The next thing Winona knew,  her dad married another lady,  a church going hard-line lady.

Trouble was,  Winona couldn't do anything right and her clothes were all wrong.   She had to cover up all her skin!!   She got the idea her body was ugly and sinful.

Topping all of that, whenever anything went wrong,  so was blamed and ridiculed.   To say she had any sense of self worth,  well,  a person can't!!

One day,  out of the blue,  her dad died.  A phone call to the lady who'd married her dad.   The lady looked at her,  after hanging up,  and said 'Your dad died last night.'    That was it.   A statement of fact.   Even when she broke down and was huddled on the floor,  crying her eyes out,  the lady just looked at her and went about her business.

The whole family showed up for the funeral.

It was a testament to the fact of how little the family thought of her when she was asked which songs she'd like sung that not one was used.

The one good thing about the lady who was married to her father,  she stepped up to the plate and took her when the whole family balked at stepping up to the plate and taking her home with them.   Can't have that,  now can we??
