After they left, I felt myself shaking lightly. I wasn't sure what to do now. Should I even go to school tomorrow? After debating on what I should do until the first ray of light cracked the dark sky, I finally decided on pretending everything was normal... but I would have to stay alert and cautious. After feeling better about my situation now that I had a plan, I tried to get my homework done until I had to get ready.
After getting dressed and countless attempts to try and hide the dark circles under my eyes, I made breakfast. But there was a problem. Usually, my mom made bacon and eggs for me so we didn't have to buy cereal or other stuff like that. But I had never attempted to try and it make it myself until this point. So I ended up eating burned bacon and dry eggs with a grumpy silence hanging around me like a dark cloud.
After eating a few mouthfuls, I couldn't eat anymore so I got my backpack, and headed out towards the bus stop, noticing with surprise that my backpack seemed remarkably lighter. I slipped onto the bus quietly when it got to my stop.
"Hey, I'm Evie, can I sit next to you?"
I looked up with a start. No one noticed me and I was glad. I had become good at being like a silent ghost. I cleared my throat. "Uh, sure, yeah... go ahead," I stuttered.
"Thanks," she said, as she sat down. It was at this time that I actually looked at her closely. Her hair looked as if it had been sitting in a bucket of bleach overnight! Her eyes looked like chips of ice glinting in blue moonlight.
"So, what's your name?"
I was startled out of my thoughts, "Oh, uh I'm Brianna but usually, if people even notice me, they call me Bri."
"Nice! Bri sounds really pretty, just like a warm breeze passing through in the summer," when she said that, she seemed as if she nearly wanted to puke. I still felt a little uneasy, like something was not exactly right; like a storm brewing in the distance. She seemed to send shivers up and down my spine whenever she spoke. Her voice chilled me to the bone.
"So are you new here or something?" I asked trying to keep the awkward silence from settling in between us.
"Yeah, my uh," she paused as if searching for a particular word," brother is here too, but yesterday he was hanging out with his friends so he's on a different bus."
"That's swell! I'm an only child, it can get rather lonely sometimes. Is he your only brother or do you have more?" I asked, slowly warming up to her.
"It's only him and me, thank goodness for that!"
We laughed. The bus suddenly came to a stop. "Well, here's the school, see ya later!" I offered a warm smile.
"Yeah, catch you later," she replied as we got off the bus and parted ways. I frowned. Catch you later, what was that supposed to mean? I shrugged the thought away as I entered the school.
