Chapter 6
After what felt like hours, I was finally alone. I sagged against the pillows. It was like I had twenty pounds on my shoulders since I'd woken up in Asgard. I ached to be back on the Helicarrier in Nick's arms. At that moment, I cried like I haven't in years; sobs racked my body until I fell asleep.
I woke to a rustling outside my window. Suddenly, it was thrust open like it had been possessed. I closed my eyes and tried to even out my breathing. I heard a loud thump then footsteps that sounded distinctly familiar. From behind my eyelids, I saw what seemed like the glow from a lantern illuminate my room. I heard the footsteps coming closer and closer until my body was shadowed completely. The intruder leaned down, close to my head. His-assuming it is a he- breaths were loud and uncomfortable on my face, I had to resist the urge to shudder, for fear of being discovered.
"I know you are awake." He whispered into my ear. There went that facade. His voice was deep, familiar, yet I was sure I hadn't heard it in a long time. I shot up like I had been struck by lightening in recognition. I looked at his face, to confirm my suspicions.
"You!" I screeched.
"Me." He smirked. He started crawling on my bed, coming closer and closer. "Are you surprised to see me? Honestly, do you think I'd give up without a fight?"
"You can't be here. Help!" I screamed the last part, desperately trying to get away from him, even though I'd run out of space soon. He slapped me across the face. Immediately I recoiled in pain, just like I used to. He shot me an evil, vengeful look and pulled me in for an angry, harsh kiss. He quickly ran to the window and, sending me a wink, leaped out of it with the grace of a gazelle. Like cued, Thor burst in a second too late.
"What's wrong?" Thor acquired. He scanned the room, eyes stopping on the open window. He ran to it and looked outside. "Nothing, He's gone." He slammed his empty hand against the window frame. I whimpered at the loud noise, curling into a ball. At the sound of my whimper, he ran to my side and enveloped me in a hug, scowling at the state of disarray I was in. I burrowed into his chest, finally letting myself cry about the ordeal. For a moment, it was silent. However, the silence was short-lived. Mother, Sif, the Warriors Three, and Odin rushed in, struggling to fit through the doorway at the same time. After scanning the room for danger, their eyes turned towards Thor holding my trembling figure. The Warriors Three almost went on a rampage when they saw the stinging hand print on my face. Thor quickly joined them when Mother and Sif rushed over to embrace me. But, Father just looked mildly curious.
"What happened?" Odin said in his booming voice. I shrunk away, hiding in my blankets.
"Odin, don't ask her such things in that tone of voice." Mother reprimanded. "She is obviously traumatized."
"Do not raise your voice to me, Frigga." the Allfather shouted. "You will stop defying me!"
"I do not defy you unless it is about our children, you leave the parenting to me." Mother softly said.
"I do not mean any disrespect, but can you please take this matter elsewhere." Hogun piped up. Seeing the looks on my parents faces, he elaborated. "Away from Mildri."
Odin's eyes twitched. "Fine." He forced out, storming away.
"Feel better." Mother softly said, kissing the top of my head. She then turned to everyone else. "Protect her." She then glided out.
"Your mother is scary." Fandral said, looking shaken.
"Boys, it is Girl Time." Sif said. After seeing no change in their demeanor, she sighed. "Leave."
"No." Volstagg stubbornly said.
"Well, if you want to hear about our monthly cramps, by all means, stay." I said with a smirk on my face. Volstagg ran from the room as fast as his legs could possibly carry him. Alas, the rest stayed put. Suddenly, Sif got a gleam in her eye that meant she was up to no good.
"So Mildri, how was Nick?" She said with a deadly smirk on her face. The tone of her voice was the same as when she taunted her enemies. The boys' expressions changed as soon as they comprehended the meaning of her words.
"Nope. No, no, no, no, no, no. Lalalalalalala. I can't hear you!" Thor cried, sprinting out of the room, pulling Hogun and Fandral out with him.
"What happened?" Sif softly asked, getting under the covers next to me.
"Haakon." I said, flinching when I relived the memory.
"No." Sif breathed. "I thought Frigga exiled him."
"Father wouldn't allow that, he never believed me when I told him what Haakon had done. The best mother could do was ban him from the castle grounds, obviously he didn't take that seriously." I said with a bitterness in my voice.
"Wouldn't Heimdall have seen him?" Sif questioned.
"Even Heimdall has blind spots in this realm." I sadly stated. "I've been in contact with him this whole time, he would've told me if he saw Haakon."
"He knew where you were and didn't tell us?!"
"I asked him not to."
"But still-" Sif was interrupted by Mother, Father, Hogun, Fandral, Volstagg, and Thor bursting into the room with various expressions. Mother looked concerned in a mamma-bear-protecting-her-cubs way, Hogun looked like someone was about to step on his favorite flower beds, Fandral looked like someone had spilled his beer, Volstagg looked like a horse had gotten to his cake before he had, Thor looked like someone had threatened my life, and Father looked like someone had given him a particularly complicated riddle.
"Look what you did Father! If you hadn't arranged a marriage, none of this would've happened, she wouldn't be in this state." Thor seethed.
"You will show me respect unless you want a repeat of before." Odin demanded.
"Send me to Midgard, I'll take Mildri with me and you will have no heir to the throne, no successor, no children. It's your choice." Thor sassed, holding his arms out, as if expecting a hug from someone charging at him.
Odin opened his mouth, then closed it.
"It looks like you've rendered him speechless. I've never seen this before, it's rather refreshing." I comment. Suddenly, Sif, the boys, Father, and Mother collapsed. Before Thor fell unconscious, he said one word: Run.
