Katsuki had been feeling weird for a while now.

Its what he imagines being hit in the head feels like - how he knows that, he has no idea. (Has he ever gotten in fights? He can't seem to remember.)

There's an inexplicable itch in his hands, twitching every so often as if always ready to blow something - or someone? - up.

But there's no one there.

-----

They have an empty desk in their classroom.

It's burnt and charred with what he imagines his quirk would look like on wood. But that's not possible - it couldn't have been him, could it?

But Katsuki also knows for a fact that no one else in their class has a fire related quirk. He sometimes looks at the desk and wonders.

(Everyone else seems to know something, so he doesn't ask; doesn't want to feel stupid. Just accepts that someone was once there and now isn't, not anymore.)

Katsuki sometimes hears his classmates talking about him when they think he isn't listening. He hears "acting weird" and "hit by quirk" and "will it stop?".

He thinks they like him more how he is now. He doesn't remember their names, but a guy with wings and a guy with weirdly elongated fingers tend to stick around him. (He's called them his friends once and they looked at him weirdly, then at each other, and quickly agreed. Katsuki tries to not read too much into it.)

He keeps hearing the name Deku - and then there's flashes of green, sprinkles of freckles, and suddenly he feels like something's missing.

Katsuki first tries to ask about Deku, but whenever he does they get that weird look for a few seconds, before smoothing it out into a carefully polite face, and tell him they don't know anything. He hears them whisper afterwards, around corners and in halls; "I don't want to trigger anything. He's much nicer like this:"

So he decides to do some investigating himself.

He types 'Deku' into the search engine, but it gives him no results, so he tries 'Izuku' instead when he realises the kanji are the same. Seeing as Izuku is a fairly odd name and paired with their district, it doesn't take long for the search to come up with something.

He sees a missing report and freckles and green and that fucking smile and the world goes black.

He wakes up in the same position as the night before, head cramped uncomfortably between some books and his keyboard.

At school he thinks about Midoriya Izuku, a fourteen year old boy who went missing just some weeks ago - who was quirkless.

(He sees bursts of red and screams of pain and flinches and wonders what he was like before.)

Now, whenever he enters the classroom, a feeling of dread and intense longing overcomes him.

He looks at the desk and sees messy notebooks and windswept hair, looks at the window and sees himself.

(He looks at the roof and sees a boy.)

The following week there's a bouquet of red and white spider lilies on the desk.

(Katsuki wonders if he'll ever remember - 'Kacchan' echoing in the back of his mind.)
