I took a sip from my hot chocolate. Alesa burrowed her head into my neck and I put my arm around her. Milton lay in our lap as we watched Jimmy Fallon in our living room.
It's December 18th. I wear a sweatshirt, scarf, and jeans with knee socks on and Alesa wears earmuffs, a sweater, jeans and Ugs. Milton wears a little doggy sweater and a fire was burning in our fireplace. Outside it snowed and was cold, but we were warm under our blanket inside. It was about 11:00 and Jimmy Fallon was doing a segment with Jennifer Lawrence where they had to guess what was in the box that the other was holding.
---
A little while later, Jimmy Fallon had ended. Milton had gone off somewhere and Alesa was asleep on my shoulder. I slowly stood up. I wrapped one arm around Alesa's legs and one around her neck, carrying her to our bedroom. I set her down and tucked her in, kissing her forehead and walking to the door. Grabbing my keys and putting on a heavy coat, I headed outside for a walk.
It had stopped snowing but the world was covered in a thin blanket of snow. I could feel it crunching under my feet as I walked around this small neighborhood. Christmas lights were up at nearly every house, reminding me that I needed to put up the lights. Alesa had been bugging me to put them up anyways.
I turned a corner and saw a man who looked much like a boy huddled up on the corner in the snow wearing a thin, tattered jacket. He looked around 16 or 17 years old and was practically shivering in the snow. I sighed and saw my breath turn to fog and shuddered at how cold it must be. I walked up to the boy and tapped him on the shoulder. He looked up at me with curious eyes. Bags hung from his eyes, though, telling me he wasn't really sleeping.
"You look cold." I said, not really knowing what to say. "Want to come have some hot chocolate?"
"S-sure." He stuttered. "I-I'd like that."
